Now this is the Playground - No fights please like on some of the other boards.

Just for a bit of fun, here is a chance for the vox populi of the Playground to voice its opinion.

You have the same choice as on this Thursday's ballot paper (I think).

Should Scotland vote for independence or stay part of the Union?

Those outside of the perfidious Isle of Albion probably know as much about the likely repercussions as we that live here.

In the mean time, read your Robert Burns, listen to the Proclaimers and post a few pics or something….

since i avoid the news, i'm mostly blissfully ignorant of the goings on in the world. hence, i don't have an opinion on that topic. just hope i'll finally manage to make it to Scotland in the next 2 years or so!

I love Scotland, it's a bloody long drive though.
I wonder if they with have armed guards at the border if they vote for independence? Mel Gibson brandishing his Claymore.....

without really knowing the details of what's going on over there, i guess the issue is this: what's more important, (relative) economic prosperity and stability or national pride and dignity?
i can understand the Scots' wish to be independent, and giving up what's known and (more or less) comfortable is honorable, if you are aware of and willing to deal with the consequences. if you ignore possible consequences, however, it's stupid.

p.s.: as i said, i have no idea what i'm talking about

I wonder what UK will be called if Scotland become independant. Just kingdom seems a bit stupid.

I'm going to the K. Anyway, Scotland will be fine, since they will just be called Scotland. Maybe they'll have to get rid of Wales and N. Ireland, so they can be called England. I guess they Ununited Kingdom would work, then they can keep UK.

Anyway what was the question?

Neither do we Brits.
I think you have hit the nail on the head.
Voting with the heart you might say yes, with the brain, no. But like you, I'm no economist (sorry, you might be for all I know)
Saying yes might be brilliant for the Scots, the truth is, no one really knows....

You know Maus, we ask the same question. I don't the Westminster government took the yes vote seriously until last week. Now David Cameron is panicking.... the man who lost the Union!

A bit like when George III lost the American colony....:D

My great grandfather, who was born with his "head in England and his heart in Scotland," would say YES. I'm not sure I have an opinion that would be intelligent on this matter. Visiting Scotland, England and France is on my bucket list. :D

Scotland is a beautiful country, apart from the midges in summer.....

Not my composition I have to say.

Midge

Not too keen on snakes
truth be told
not something I like to hold
in fact most lizards
and cold blooded things
my bell they don’t ring
but nature it has to strive
of my opinion she doesn’t bide
although if given a wish
I would not lie
and hope every Scottish midge
would fuck off and die

24 years ago, I visited Scotland on a bicycle tour of the Lowlands and Borderlands (my first and only trip to Europe). The question of independence was on the local news even then, but I suppose the question of Scottish independence has been in the local news since before Bonnie Prince Charles. I know the histories are very different, but my only hope is that the quest for Scottish independence does not end up like the conflict in Northern Ireland (which thankfully seems to be in a period of relative peace right now).

I thought the countryside was gorgeous and the locals quite friendly and accepting of we foreign cyclists. A great trip all in all.

Saw my favorite sign of all time outside a vendor's stall in Edinburgh:

English spoken. American understood.

I vote for a yes.

Because by the time they're drowning in their economic sorrows and begging to join us back, they'd have learned a lesson to NOT participate in a partisan movement anymore.

It's a loss on both sides.

The best option for them would be to take the offers for more political independence and say in the UK.

I got stopped by the only policeman on the Isle of Mull for speeding, he let me off with a warning :D

You can't let that go

Then again a London policeman once changed my tyre for me, maybe I'm just lucky with men in uniform

I'm very fond of Edinburgh and Glasgow too

I think it would be devastating economically and I think Salmond is an ass

It's a amazing what you get done for you, May. Perhaps it's your rather generous.... smile.....

I kind of hope for the sake of Scotland that this salmond character isn't just trying to be a pioneer.

Revolutions are the easy part, it's what is done after the revolution that leads to problems. In my opinion Scotland should vote with head not heart. I mean so much propaganda goes on in the news and at rallies. For example claiming they're under the thumb etc of England. It's a ridiculous notion and just not true, however, it is easy to rile people up by claiming it.

I think in terms of economy, Scotland doesn't have as big an issue as is being made out. If they leave the 'kingdom' remember that there is more than enough work per populous. The main issue I think a lot of scots should be concerned about is the nhs and welfare situation.
