Scandinavian corner

I haven't really experienced it yet, but I'm pretty sure I do... :D

Canes scare me though
If you come to Denmark, let me know, and I'll introduce you to a good spanking, and my cane if you feel brave ;)

Aha, German... kinky...

I took a class at the university last semester about sexuality in Swedish folklore. It was really fun; erotic stories, ballads, pictures... One can only imagine (and feel a little sad) how the most outrageous and kinky stuff was never collected and preserved.

Gave me some new and interesting perspectives on gender roles, sexual culture and society. :)

Thats sounds really interesting, I wish they offered classes like that here.

If you want ancient and kinky, look no further then India.

Exhibit A

Actually if you look around you do see a lot. For example their are these cave paintings with men holding "bows", when its so obvious they all got erections.

Prude archeology, just look past it.

It was new, first time they gave it. I enjoyed it a lot. Folklore was actually just one part of it, we ventured into family forming and structure, normality and deviance, childrens sexuality, honorability, nudity.... Spiced up with a little queer-theory and rape-trials from the fifties...

Problem with such classes is you don't get really deep into anything. But it was thoughtprovoking and entertaining. :)

Lovely picture! The bottom person is impressively multidextrous. :D

Looking past earlier prudishness is really the trick. Every interpretation is colored by the interpretors time and cultural context. That is fascinating to me.

Hi missy_me!
Of course I meant to include Finland! We're practically neighbours. :) Everytime I take the train to the city I pass the Finland cruise ships.

So I say bring it on - I can sing karaoke with the worst :D

Newly finlandizated? Where do you come from and how come?

My singing sucks so much that the only place I can imagine doing it in public would be on one of those cruise ships... J and I went to Sweden&Denmark this summer so the cruise ship experience is still vivid (maybe too vivid) in my mind!

I came from Central Europe, been living in a couple of countries there, and work brings me to Finland. Been living here for around 2 months now, and I'm already dreading the darkness of winter. Coldness I've already gotten used to during this summer. Crazy...

The Moomins? Are they based on norse mythology?

I can't really tell if you're joking or not... My brain is still dead asleep despite the time. So I'll just assume you're not joking. :)

The Moomins were sort of modeled after their creator's own family, in the sense that they are somewhat bohemian and open and caring towards all kinds of creatures.

Moomins would make a heck of a cool addition to the Norse mythology thou. I can imagine Moominmamma cooking in Bilskirnir and holding on to her handbag as a magical implement doubling her cooking speed. :D

I think if you remember the cruise too vividly you were probably not doing it right. ;)

No seriously they are embarrassingly tacky and I have very little experience with them. But in the right company I can have fun anywhere. :)

So, your av - are you a dancer?

LOL lovely image... :D

No, I'm not a dancer, but I always wanted to become one when I was a kid. Never happened. :)

Well, you haven't lived long in Finland. You'll learn...

Dance on... if that what makes you happy. Of course you're a dancer, maybe just not professionally. :)

The Moomin vallley is a fairytale-place created by the FinlandSweidish author Tove Jansson. She wrote several wonderful books about all the charachters in the valley.

That reminds me of something i found once on the internet, but, haven't found it again. The name "Hugi" was part of some Scandinavian tale. Anybody know about it?

Maybe you're thinking about Hugin and Munin, Odins two ravens. In the nordic mythology they are flying over the earth and telling Odin of everything they see. Hugin thinks and Munin remembers.

I don't know a lot about them, but if you google for Odin and Thor and the guys you should find some material. :)

Hej Rinka, how are you doing?

I was just wondering, do you enjoy reading any Scandinavian writers?

Personally I'm a big fan of Camilla Läckberg, Liza Marklund and Stieg Larsson. I also read tje Martin Beck books by Sjöwall and Wahlööm years ago.

Hej ShyGuy!
I'm just fine. :)

I love reading and especially appreciate swedish female writers. Lately I've enjoyed Maria Sveland, Åsa Lindeborg, Susanna Alakoski to mention a few.

I have earlier read both Liza Marklund and Camilla Läckberg, but I rarely read books from the detective novel genre.

Can't think of many Danish writers I've read right now. Well, years ago Peter Hoeg and Suzanne Brögger, but none recently.

Who wrote the hunger?

A disillussioned one aye but that is life lol!

I guess a little as you grow up, but at least you have the capacity and audacity to envision a different society, a different world. That's healthy in my book. :)

It's written by a Norweigan Knut Hamsun(googled it). I read it many moons ago, a very powerful book.

Ah, now I know, he won the nobel prize. The swedish title translates as starvation, so hunger didn't ring a bell. Read at least parts of it many moons ago. Sure pinpoints the curse of the treadmill, doesn't it.
