Scam?

And the OP knows that and is asking how she can distinguish herself from them. If she's genuine, it's a valid question we might be able to help her with.

Mmhm i understand But aside from that how else could i approach it? I always think differently each time so that no scammer can take advantage. Right now, I explain the process to people, and there is no money involved at this stage a scammer wouldn’t even understand this because they don’t know the work so how could they explain it? I make a comic script of their story to show them how I would do it, and only if they’re interested does the work start with their permission nothing is done without consent

Post your work. Get people to know you. If someone is interested, they'll contact you.

Don't approach it like you're networking at an event; AH is more like a rowdy bar with lots of drunken brawls rather than a convention. If you really want commissions because you're pressed for cash, go to the online markets like Fiverr or Ko-Fi instead.

Okay thanks for guiding me

Either way, I'm done talking about it and her. She decided to be a bitch
You insulted her on the basis of an incorrect assumption about where she is. Then refused to apologise, on the assumption that it wouldn't be accepted. And made another incorrect assumption about where she is.

But she's the "bitch". Riiight.
so I'm pretending she doesn't exist.
Not very well.

You know what's funny? I apologized, and people are still attacking me. Which only reinforces my belief that apologizing doesn't do shit.

Bud, Sorry not sorry is not truly an apology. It needs to be heartfelt. Yours sounded so fake.
This is why you are getting pummeled. Either truly apologize or stand by your statement. I don't care. But move on.

I've been scammed once in real life, out of £20. The scammer was really good, and also got to a few other people -- there was a piece about her in the local paper, after she'd been caught.
She was an attractive, slightly eccentric woman in her '50s driving an old, beat-up sports car with the roof down, and some antique bric-a-brac and furniture on the back seat. There were a few vintage furniture stores nearby to where she stopped and called out to me. She'd "run out of petrol" and had "left her purse and phone at home".
She'd created a very convincing character, which completely fooled me.

Pick a book you like, something that already has lots of fan art. Pick your favorite scene and make a one page comic out of part of it.

Create an account on an art website that allows you to market yourself and allows for fan art, post it there and mention that you take commissions.

Create a thread in the visual artists corner, and if they're clean enough upload them there, if not upload them to a photo site that allows for nudity and post the link. Don't mention taking commissions though, that might get your thread marked as spam. And trust me, if your art is good, there will be people asking after commissions. Might not be many though, but they do exist.

Okay boss

FWIW, I spoke to a version of the OP. They were perfectly polite and I wasn’t in need of their services. They never asked me to take the discussion elsewhere or for any PII.
So maybe it's not a scam but for some reason they play dumb about all the push-back. It smells manipulative and definitely indicates some kind of motivation other than just drumming up legitimate business.

IDK. They did provide me with price ranges. It was a normal convo, but I dont have a budget for their services. I only write for free work and my only expense is my own time (and that of my lovely beta readers of course). I’m merely relating my experience.

Ok, this is getting out of hand. @desperado1089 I sent you a DM last night telling you that I didn't care for an apology. Actually, whether I'm entitled to one or not doesn't matter, I don't like forcing people to apologize, period, it's something that you do on your own. However, you didn't answer me, I'm not sure if you read it, and since you decided to quintuple down I'd expect that no one will get what they want. You can continue posting whatever you want, but if you keep doing that it's only a matter of time before the mod comes here swinging their hammer around, and we'll all pay the price.

Like I told you on the DM, I'm willing to put this behind and pretend it didn't happen. We don't need to get along, we don't need to be friends. I chose to put down the sword, but now this is completely on you.

You're on your own, bro. Just posting this to clear the air that I offered you a peaceful resolution outside of this thread because it is already going overboard.

I've been here since July and now that I've gotten my re-edited stories out, I've had scam messages recently, too. I didn't think it possible for a site as seemingly heavily monitored as this one...

There are moderators for the forums, but I wouldn't describe their actual responsibilities as monitoring. I certainly don't expect them to perform monitoring flawlessly - there is just too much message volume. Mostly we can expect them to react to reported messages which regular users flag with the "report" button.
