It is my second day here and I am exhausted. I still have "jet-lag" and a roaring headache, but it is good to see my sister, Bryndis, again after many years without her. She looks a bit different now, since she has dyed her once dark brown hair to a pale cornsilk blonde and my guess is that she is trying to look a bit more like the other girls in town, who are predominantly blonde with blue eyes. Bryndis is four years older than I am and she has been with the same 'boyfriend', for as long as I can remember. His name is David and he is strikingly attractive, of course with blonde hair and blue eyes. David's family owns a horse ranch just outside of Arossey. Bryndis and David living together and not being married seems to be a topic of slight scandal here, and locals ask Bryndis every time she goes shopping "When will you get married? David is such a nice boy."

Translation: I can't believe you are living in sin. David is too good for you. Why buy the milk when you get the cow for free?

The weather is lovely though it rains lightly, like a mist, every evening around six, according to bryndis. She and David have bought a beautiful cottage with three bedrooms in the countryside. They have several hecatres of property and a few of David's family's prized Icelandic ponies. You might find it interesting to know that Iceland has not allowed horses to be imported into the country since 930AD, so the horses are pure bred and quite valuable.

The cottage has a nice garden and bryndis has planted tomatoes. I never imagined bryndis being happy in a country setting. She has always been the city girl, the one who went to night clubs and fashion shows and loved new York and London. I have always been the wanderer, unable to settle in one place for more than a few months. But she seems wonderfully happy here and so does David. As soon as I got to the house, we talked until early morning, and I find I have to brush up on my 'old language' because David's English is limited.

Local Gossip: last week a fifteen year old girl killed herself by throwing herself off the Gulfoss (Gull Falls) which is a great powerful waterfall. Some of the locals knew her. There is to bee a funeral in Serkengardt, which is not far from here, and we will attend to pay proper respects. Here, even strangers attend something as tragic as this. It is simply proper to pay respects, rather we knew her or not. Here, if we did not offer help to her family, we would be terribly rude. It is what I like about my homeland. Everyone has a general respect of life, death and people.

Have a day.

Sateema,

Just a quick post to let you know that your posts are read and appreciated. Not only are your words special, but I was first captivated by your photographs. I hope that you are taking planty of pictures there in Iceland that will eventually find their way here.

Your paragraph on the teen suicide was a poignant one to read, and I 'm sure even more magnified when you are actually there. It must be a wondeful place to have that strong sense of community. Be safe in your travels, and keep posting!

Sateema..

Love hearing about your trip!!! Very exciting and interesting for me to read and see it through your eyes.

Take care, sweetie.

Sateema's Icelandic Adventure:

Not much going on right now really. We were planning on going to David's ranch today to play with the horses and then Bryndis wanted to take me to see Kruesk (a volcano) but the young girl's funeral comes with a certain amount of mourning time for everyone. It is inappropriate to go out and horse around (pun intended) after a death locally. This is a small village just outside of Gulfoss and Arossey. It is more a small settlement without a name really. I am guessing the population is around 300, maybe 305 if someone has a lot of company over. The general attitude of mourning for all only applies to "tragic" death, meaning someone going before their time. If an old man dies of natural causes, only his family is in mourning.

The girl, Haffe's funeral is tomorrow. David and I have been gathering up veggies from the garden to bring to the family (a traditional offering) and Bryndis spent most of the last two days helping her schoolteacher friend with some errands that need be done. We are not as backwards as we seem, it is just that some of the old ways still live here.

When I have more time, I will tell youof the irony of haffe's chosen death, since another woman threw herself off the falls in the early 1900's.

But now, I am cozy by the fire and have little else to do but sit here and type, though I am very tired. It is raining hard and the windows rattle. Bryndis and David still ask about what America is like. David has only been out of Iceland to visit England and bryndis has been in Ireland and briefly to New York when she was a child.

I made them cheeseburgers and they thought it was the coolest thing, like somehow since I made them, they must taste more "American."
