Ok, I down loaded Safari for Windows this morning and have been using it for the past hour or so. I do have to say that the fonts are much clearer than in IE or Firefox. Also all the controls are Apple Style controls. Other than that I haven't noticed that much difference from IE or Firefox.

Has anyone else downloaded Safari? Opinions?

I'm using it now as a trial. I hear there may be security issues, but I am hoping other products I have are blocking that.

Let's hope so. Other than that, what do you think? Better than IE, Firefox? About the same?

I use Safari. But I have a Mac. I've found it a more than adequate browser.

I've had no security issues with it either.

It looks nice, but I've only used it on Lit for now. I wrote a script that brings it up, and then if I walk away from the PC, exits it after 5 minutes so Lit isn't sitting on my machine. I use FF for my standard browsing.

I use a lot of FF plugins, so I don't see permanently moving to Safari as an option.

Thanks Rob. So far it does seem adequate although there seems to be a problem with how fast it responds to the pointer and mouse clicks.

Sometimes I have to click on something twice, once to select the control then the second time to activate the control. So there would seem to be a glitch in the mouseover feature of the pointer.

Ah...

I only use FF to browse Lit and some other...select sites. The rest of the time I use IE 7 as it holds a lot of form data and such to access sites with passwords, etc.

safari vs firefox

I was browsing through and noticed this post

As far as I know, safari has no major outstanding security issues. However, typically safari crashes more than firefox on OSX since safari sits on top of an image library in OSX that is known to be somewhat unstable (there are a lot of images of death, that if you load whatever program that is using the library dies instantly. you don't want to set them as your background.). This may or may not happen on windows depending on if they've ported the coreimage library, and whether they've finally gotten around to fixing it.

Aside from that, I'd have to say that safari is the best browser around. It's ridiculously fast, which may or may not be an issue for you on your hardware, it has, ahem, private browsing, its javascipt support is on par with firefox (and miles ahead of IE) and it has better CSS support than both firefox and IE.

Firefox plugins are nice... but they are one of the reasons that firefox is comparatively bloated and slow. That is to say, the UI elements and plugins of firefox tend to be written in java script, which means you need extra memory and CPU power to keep an extra java script runtime running.

So far no crashes on the windows platform only minor glitches which I have mentioned in past posts. It is fast but I have a superfast CPU and Connection, so all the browsers are fast.

I did notice that images download faster in Safari than IE or FF though. As for the text it's about equal in speed, although IE is a little bit slower but then I have the anti-phishing control running.

I use Safari almost exclusively...but then, like Rob, I have a Mac. I wouldn't say that it tends to crash. Once in a great while, yes, but that's life with computer programs. You just start over again.

I *have* noticed that it won't support *some* few sites, and for those I use FF. This doesn't happen often, but it does happen, and it's more likely to happen with forums where there's a chatroom or a video (a news story say) that is very Windows oriented and hostile to anything but IE and FF.

Other than that, I love Safari. I have tabs for a dozen sites, I can refresh several at the same time. I like being able to jump from tab to tab, site to site, no muss, no fuss

Hmmm...IE and FF along with Opera all have tabs now. In fact the new version of Opera has a tab called speeddial where you can but you most visited web sites and with just a click be there.

In FF If I click on someones' name in Lit, I get a menu with "send PM", "search for all posts" "profile" etc. In Safari, it just takes me to their profile.

I may have a setting like ********** I need to change.

Not what I get (on a Mac--I get the expected menu)--but it's Beta, especially for Windows. There may be bugs.

New for Mac too! Cool!

Rob! I hadn't seen the Keynote--apparently this Safari Beta isn't just for windows--it has some new features like allowing you to move around the tabs or pull one out into a full window--or send the website in an e-mail to someone without having to call up mail.

Very cool!

You can download it here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/

Have you checked out the keynote: WWDC '07 Keynote

:nana: Leopard stuff--VERY exciting! :nana:

Hmm. Works for me. At least here at Lit.

3113? The main reason I'm looking forward to Leopard is it has Boot Camp in it. I will have to get a copy of Windows (Shudder) but I'll be able to play PC Games on my Mac. :D

Just checking the "Why you'll love Safari" page on Apple's site. Seems there's one innovative feature - resizeable text boxes. Rest is nice stuff, but stuff I already have.

I'll install it now and get back to ya all on the "fastest browser ever on any platform" claim. :)

What's the deal w that?
Interesting. Remember--it's Beta. You put this shit out there so that people can test it en masse and give you feedback for the finished product. So...send a bug report.

I also use Safari exclusively because I mostly work on my Mac. I love Safari, but part of that love is that it's like all the other Mac programs which makes it super easy to use. When I can't get something to load on Safari, I switch to either Camino or Opera, but it's pretty rare. As for crashing, I think it happens one or two times a month, so no more frequently than the other browsers. Safari is actually, in my opinion, the best at storing passwords and auto-fill info. In fact, I rarely have to fill in my name and address on forms anymore because once I start filling in my name, Safari fills all the rest of the boxes in for me (mostly correctly).
I may download the beta on my pc later and check out the differences.
