Sad Thread - We Lost a Kitty

We just put our oldest kitty to sleep.

It was necessary; he had cardio myopathy, lots of difficulty breathing and was on serious medication to help with his pulmonary edema. We tried to get him through this latest bout but realized he wasn't improving and was in fact experiencing some pain.

I called ahead to the vet and told them what was happening while my husband took the kitty in. That was hard.

My husband said the procedure was quick and painless for our cat. So that was OK.

But tomorrow morning we have to tell the kids what happened. And that may be the hardest part.

Mac was a Ragdoll breed, had lots of long black fur, he loved to carry helium balloons around by their strings and possessed the unique talent of flushing the toilet. We still have it on video.

Please drink a toast tonight to our lost kitty - Macavity. :rose:

We have a 14 year old dachsund that we worry about every night. Will she wake up in the morning? Sorry for your loss. Hope all goes well with the kids.

Our dearest pets are more then that. They are our family...I have a cat who is just starting to have the problems making jumps that used to be easy, etc. It will be hard on all of us when she goes in a couple years...and one of the first things to bring me out of lurkerdom was Tatelou's loss...I wrote this for that time, but it fits here..

I will always remember
the warmth on my just vacated lap
as you stalked away across the floor

the soft tickle of your whiskers
as you perched on my chest
and butted my nose
because your dish was empty

the silent intensity
staring through the window glass
the singing bird
safe on the other side

wait for me friend
and snooze in memory's sunshine
I'll be along
eventually

not all partings are permanent.

Aww, take care Macavity, you were a good cat, loved by many :)

Sweetsubsarahh, it's not easy, telling such grief to children, though often they takeit better than you expect. Beth did, when our Charlie died and she still talks about him sometimes, even naming a soft toy she recently acquired "Charlie" because he looks just like our little friend, who is curently playing with the angels :)

Belegon -beautiful words - Made me sob outloud :rose:

So, did the kids enjoy how a cat tastes like?

Did you grill or fry?

Thank you everyone - CV included. Honestly, it's nice to known despite everything that happens some things (or people) will always remain the same.

Belegon - that's beautiful. Thank you for reposting it here.

Our kids are fine - some tears, some questions, a quick trip out to see where we buried Mac (very nice spot by the redbud trees along the back fence in our huge back yard) and now some grandiose ideas of the kind of garden they want to plant around that area.

Mac's garden? I think I'll suggest Kitty Garden, but it's good to see them well-occupied on a serious task.

Life goes on. But I already miss that big ol' kitty. :rose:

kids are so resilant. the many hamsters that we've sent to the big blue ocean are mourned for a while until the next distraction comes along.
its a wonder, though...how does it really effect us?
first santa claus... the easter bunny... death of loved pets. it all shapes us somehow.
i get the feeling that your kids take things well because of how you handle the situation...rather than the situation itself. youre a great mama. be proud.

I'll rise a glass for your Mac tonight. Like Bel said, it's not just pets. They're companions, friends, even family. I have a cat who should had croaked years ago, but hangs on by sheer stubbornness. It will be utterly strange the day she no longer takes a nap on my keyboard when I need to use it.

The oldest bird we own is 11 this year. She's still perky, though. Our next oldest bird is three years old.

Sorry to hear your kitty finally had to go. Remember the things that made him special sometimes, and thanks for sharing him with us. :)

Sarah,

I feel for you and will of course light a candle for the "Mac".

As was said above pets are more than that, they are our companions, our family members, and in some cases they teach us about life. (Including to watch where you place your feet first thing in the morning.)
