I am really enjoying my book. I don't know if any of you remember the character Peki from the Dominance, Inc. story, but as I was reading through the history and origins of Shibari in the book I ran across Hojojutsu-Dorei. It made me smile as I remember this from part of my research for Peki's character.
 
When I first visited the local dungeon here, I got to play a bit with a Dom who had a violet wand. He had a pair of gloves he had made that were really interesting both with and without the current going through. I'm not sure what the tips were made out of, but they were a bit like Freddy Kruger gloves, with sharp metal tips coming out of the fingertips of the gloves - they were sort of cone shaped and seemed to fit over the fingertips pretty snugly under the gloves, but stuck through the ends. If you put enough pressure behind it, I'm sure you could cut the skin, but he didn't go that far with them. They were quite intense whether the electricity was going through them or not.

Gotta say, RJ, I'm starting to look at gloves in a whole new light. :D

I saw something simillar to what your describing with the freddy cruger look to them. They do look pretty intensive.

I really hope I like these blue ones when they arrive. I will give a full report on them once they do and if I would recommend them.

Well, I have devored the Midori book and reading it through now a second time.

I have been practicing alot with coiling and throwing while holding the mid point. As I coil and put my rope away I have a set way so that I can pick up the rope palming the mid point, add a quick throw and wrist movement to get the rope to lay straight and parallel. Looks pretty impressive when done right and allows me then to go directly into tieing three evenly spaced knots for the start of a diamond shaped Torso-crotch harness/Jomon.

I am still learning certain terms and such, but the term Jomon means "rope patttern". This terms comes from a period of Japanese culture 10,000 BCE to 300 BCE called the Jomon period and was associated to the distinctive rope-patterned pottery as seen below.


When refering to an over-all rope design, is it poper to use the term jomon? If anyone knows, please let me know as I hate using a term improperly.

One of the things I have learned is that I shan't be making a living any time soon as a shibari model :eek: One of the things though I have found as an advantage of tieing oneself is the all coming together at once kind of feel. It requires you to leave some movement in the overall harness until the end, and then you can "draw" the rope adjusting it. This makes for good practice in adjusting tightness and such which is important to do. I find having a full length mirror really helps when working the back.

The other thing I am finding is this is a total workout. After working the rope over and over for hours, talk about sweat and sore. I like it alot.
 
Not sure I would worry too much about getting terminology correct as you will find a lot of people are probably not going to relatre as readily to what you are talking about as if you use more commonly or generalised terms. F deoes some great bondage and used to give demonstrations before my time...he is very good at getting a crotch knot in just the right spot to be majorly felt in just the way intended. Be careful though RJ that you don't have the same problem as can happen with things such as putting on ties, mastering it on oneself only to be all fingers and thumbs when you try and do it for another person...it is that different approach/perspective thing which turns it all upside down. Also too, you will find binding males and females are different when getting into intricate work, and self bondage impossible once you move beyond just torso and including more restrictive methods. HAve fun though as rope can be a gorgeous tool to work with. I just wish I didn't have such allergic reactions to it which restricts us to full cotton ropes if planning for me to be tied more than 30 minutes max, sometimes not even that.

I'm glad Midori wrote her book. There is a lot of great information offered in it. The ProDomme I lived with has been a long time acquaintance of Midori, and Midori worked out of my Dommes dungeon in San Francisco. Ma'am, my Domme, lived in Japan for many years and taught bondage to women starting their own ProDomme business'. I had the great fortune to be the model for many of her classes. I would spend hours in that "diamond shaped Torso-crotch harness/Jomon" naked with nothing but the rope.

Standing there while being bound I remember the wonderful sensual pleasure of the rope being slowly drawn across my body. Whenever Ma'am moved, for instance, from the front of my body to the back she took plenty of time to draw the full length of the rope slowly over my shoulder - standing there, naked, no sounds, no music, no other touch, just the slow steady draw of the soft rope moving along my skin... mmmmmmmmm

US west coast style shibari and its global siblings = "california roll." (still good, just not the most authentic of sushi) It's a mongrel art developing around a knot for which there IS no name in Japanese even, and which a bunch of American Geeks have designated "boola boola."

It's really good fusion. However the name game is really interesting, and I've been discouraged by my teachers from fixating on names for things which aren't even consistent within Japan. Some people who fixate on these things are crack researchers of what's going down in Japan, and others just are really into Japonisme.

The word "Shibari" as I understand it would confuse a Japanese rigger in all likelihood. It means "tie" or "bind" but in the engineering sense. Kinbaku-bi would be more intelligible as "erotic rope art"

but apparently the English word "bondage" is hip and cool lately

MOST Japanese nawa jujun (rope bottoms) would be offended by "dorei" (a borrowed Greek word actually for "slave") A lot of the models seem to like "m-jo short for "masochistic girl".

This is per my sources and reads.

If anyone could probably teach a branch close to "authentic" it's Midori, and she's often the first to point out things like "of course Japanese Nawashi are all barefoot, they don't WEAR shoes indoors!" when westerners are caught up in the romance of the barefoot Nawashi.


I'm not sweating the names at this point, but I *have* been fantasizing about seeing an Osada Steve show.

Midori's book is also the first 2-D source I've held in my hot little hands where the diagrams jived with how I think enough for me to execute the ties. If the boy scout diagrams and such frustrate a person she's tapped into a really clear and elegant spatial illustration - the book is incredibly good.

Cat -- one of the things Bridgett Harrington covered in her suspension class was incorporating other materials into suspension. I know that cotton has a generally so-so load rating, whereas thick cotton fabric bunched and doubled over can have a load rating comparable to hemp - you may very well have thought of this, but if not it sure had my wicked gears spinning.

Thanks for that Netzach, this could be a whole new experience!! Of late I am beginning to panic as it seems everything is making me itch.....just another side effect of approaching menopause I suspect, but frustrating waiting for the process to work itself out. This week I begin experiementing with a new, supposedly non-allergenic clothes washing liquid, though I am beginning to suspect on top of my usual allergic reaction to many of the threads used to stitch comercially bought garments, I am developing an allergy to any material that has been dyed. Oh well, at least I am learning to deal with yet more obstacles and knowledge is always a good thing. :)
