Confirmed from multiple sources - Bowie died on Sunday. Cancer, age 69.

Damn. Such a talent.

Damn indeed! He wasn't that old - was he? 70's at the most, no?

Such a creative and talented guy! What a shame to lose him.

Two days past his 69th birthday (released a new album the same day). Brilliant man, never afraid to try something new.

"Life On Mars" is such a gloriously sad song. Lots of other great ones, but that's the one that's been on repeat in my mind today.

I was so sad and surprised to hear this. I was never a huge Bowie fan -- I mean, I've always liked what I heard, but I never went out to buy albums. Still, he was always such a looming presence in pop music. So many artists were influenced by him, directly or indirectly.

Rats.

A jarring note. Mebbe there's something missing from my make up. Bowie was ok and produced a few good things and a fair bit of dross - which is not a bad result for an artist. 69, not a great age but not too bad either. But mostly I don't feel the sense of personal loss, expressed with some decorum here ( and none at all on the GB )

Freddie Mercury and John Lennon died too young with much left in the tank but most celebrities don't warrant the outpouring of ( confected?) grief.

I would be prepared to argue that if Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse for examples had died a few years earlier, it would have improved the memory of them.

See for me, Winehouse is different, she's in the section with all the other overdose types. They cut their own life short. Not that its still not sad, but they rode the tiger and it threw them off.

Bowie became a cult figure in the seventies with his androgynous style which today in the word of "Caitlyn Jenner" would be ho-hum, but back then a big deal.

The New York Dolls were controversial, again in the world of Lady Gaga not so much, but forty years ago this was ground breaking.

That and people always feel attached to things from their youth and if you came of age in the 70's Bowie was a big part of it for a lot of people.

His music was good and influenced many, his movies were pretty good too. I wouldn't call it dross.

Dross is what we pretty much do when we post here.:D

I've always respected his music.

I also bought his previous album, the one from 2 years ago.

I only found out that he had a new one a few days ago. i'll need to get that too.

rip

DB had been around for decades when I got to know about him, but he was never old in the sense of just regurgitating the same old hits as other musicians do when they run short of booze money. He was always looking beyond convention, always looking forward, like he was compelled to.
I remember when I first heard Low and then I found out when it was written and was wtf?! Then jump forward to the Next Day album, his 24th, and it's pushing things forward again... and at 66 he was smoking hot.
We need people like Bowie who question established ideas, without being an anarchist, but by showing us alternatives.

Picked up Blackstar on the day it came out - Bowie was always a safe bet and this album was no exception. So sad to see such an icon of the industry pass. Musically he was a genius, and he carried that genius over to every aspect of his life.

I remember being excited when he announced that he wanted to try out being part of a band and connected with Reeves Gabrels and the Sales brothers (yep, dad was Soupy Sales) to form Tin Machine - great band with fantastic music - absolutely loved them.

Aren't many like Bowie out there - he will be missed.

Fly well Major Tom.

I have no idea why, but the whole Bowie passing really struck me hard today. I mean, I'm not a huge fan but I'm just having one of those blue/emotional days from it.

Amazing how some people can touch us in these strange ways.

RIP Bowie. And big hugs to others who are slogging through today with the news. -_-

Bowie, Lou, the masters of their generation, yes, the mortal coils are shuffling faster now.

Those guys were the soundtrack for my youth, when we measured time in twenty minute increments (the average album side playing time for the younger folk out there...). Make that twenty-five minute increments, the extra five was the dope addled person nearest the turntable getting their shit together to turn the bloody record over....

When Keith and Charlie go, it will be like Lady Di all over again. Mick the bastard will live into his nineties, like his old man did.

For me, the day Leonard Cohen dies will be the end of days.

But for The Thin White Duke, ashes to ashes, Ziggy, ashes to ashes

Ziggy Stardust

May your star shine the brightest David Bowie.
