RIP David Bowie

Sarah is magnificent, one of Australia's best artists.

I listen to the Js every day to and from work. Best radio station, ever! Been around for forty years, so embedded in any music lover's psyche.

I remember different Bowie songs from all the different times of my life: Ziggy Stardust when I was a teenager was extraordinary, exotic - alien indeed. When I was at college, we were dancing to China Girl (which had a bit of an odd resonance for me) and Let's Dance.

One of my friends in London was on the band scene with Bowie and used to say Bowie knew him, but only remembered him when drunk :). (By the time I met him he was back to running his Dad's vegetable stall in the street market.) He would sometimes show me a photo of himself and his band members - he was the only one who was still alive.

The Fella was a Bowie fan and used to play Piglet the DVD of songs - he would have to stay with her and manually skip over some which were not appropriate for a four year old! She remains a keen Bowie fan and was very saddened by the news.

:rose: RIP

Watched a 2 hour concert for his 50th birthday in Madison Square Gardens last night on Youku.

Lou Reed was the standout for me as they dueted several Reed songs. But the female African bass player doing 'Under Pressure' was equally fabulous.
Brilliant concert. Amazing stage effects. Bowie looked good too!

Love the song too. Just found a cover version done as a tribute by Australian singer/songwriter Sarah Blasko for Radio station JJJ. Absolutely amazing.

Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Just heard that version today, it's excellent. Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes have extra resonance for me because of the BBC series - I loved that one, and although they didn't use Bowie's music much, it was at the heart of it.

But "Lazarus"...what a good-bye.

I feel sad for his daughter. Losing your father at fifteen, and I'm guessing she would've had to keep it a secret from all her friends. That's a hard thing for a kid to carry.

Oh! we must see if it's the same guy. He moved to Ireland with his family. He is a sweetie and so kind to me always.

When I first got to know him I was queuing at his stall for cheap vegetables and he asked what my badges were. Well ... they were all the ones I collected from Gay Pride marches. As far as I knew, he was just a regular white guy selling vegetables from a street stall but you can't lie about your Gay Pride badges, can you? So I gulped and said it.

The next time I was at the stall, I was queuing with a small cabbage in my hand which was on offer for about 20p. He came rushing out from behind the stall with a cabbage three times the size of my head and said: "No, you want this one! It's the same price." As I left the rest of the queue were complaining and saying they also wanted one like mine. :)

We became the bestest of friends and often used to go out and have meals together. He was very romantic and loved to go out but he used to feel obliged to give his lady friends a good shag afterwards. He really liked to go out with me as I was gay, so he didn't feel obliged to put out as well as buying me a meal! :D
