A polling firm called EDK Associates conducted a national survey of 200 male Americans, both single and married, between the ages of 18 and 45. They found that the median number of women that men claimed they had slept with was 10. They also asked men to state what they believed the "ideal number" of partners SHOULD BE for both men and women. Men said:
14 for a man
6 for a woman
(Ahh...the old double standard with cheese. Hmmmm...makes ya wonder who they're sleeping with those extra 8 times, eh?)
Of course, we all know that there isn't some absolute "ideal number" of partners that we should all have, but this was how men and women felt about their own personal number (according to a different survey):
"I wish it were lower":
Men: 22%
Women: 49%
"I'm happy with it as is":
Men: 52%
Women: 44%
"I wish it were higher":
Men: 26%
Women: 7%
My number for sexual partners is four. (That number depicts actual intercourse...it does not include men with whom I had merely fooled around with while dating.) With each of those men, sex was enjoyed within the realms of a long-term relationship. I've never had a one-night stand, though I wouldn't deny that it's always been a fantasy...it's just never happened.
I will admit that I *do* wish that my number were a little higher only because I think that having gotten married so young (at age 23), that I have missed out on experiences that may have served in helping to know myself better. And taming those wild oates is still sometimes a full-time job. *half-assed smirky grin*
A friend of mine once told me (and wisely so) that the answer is simple: There is no "right" number. You keep going til you find the person who makes you want to stop. If you have a thousand partners, then you are searching for something that you just can't find.
--So what is your magic number?
--Are you happy with it?
--Do you wish it were lower or higher?
--How do you view your number...ie. as a measure of your attractiveness or as a measure of your insecurities?
--Have you ever lied about your number to your current or past lovers?
