I grew up in the Artesia, Lakewood, Paramount area

George Carlin had a good bit about this, but hell if I can remember it. Concerning the whie kids trying to act all ghetto.... Unless you actually grow up in the ghetto, just be white and lame. That's what we are. I've noticed though, black people are so free and open with their language... if you get black kids and white kids together for any lenght of time, eventually the white kids will start talking like the black kids.

I lived in the athletic dormatory at college. I had to learn this second language to communicate. But only "in the dorm".

In class, everyone spoke proper English.

Why, I don't know. Myriad sub-dialects pop up in all languages.

Exactly... it's just a Dialect... it's like Bostonian, or Southern. It's not a new language. Unforntuantely, the way some people use it, it makes then sound stupid. But it's the same with all dialects... it's the charming souther Belle versus Bubba the redneck

Yes, even here in Canada we are well aware of Compton and Watts. Not places where one would wish to be born, the future sure would seem bleak.

That's one of the ONLY good things about this place. I hate it here... there's FAR too many people for my tastes... and everyone here is so fake....

I'm familiar with those areas. I miss SoCal. It was 20 degrees here last night. Brrrrh.

But hey, I grew up in the "white ghetto", so what do I know, Eh?

No, there'd you'd be wrong. Some people stay mired there, others escape. Lots of people escape. I worked for a guy who grew up in Watts while I lived there. By the time I got to know him he was older and had finished his undergrad and both graduate degrees and was gliding towards retirement and looking forward to converting is $1M SoCal home for something comfortable in Arizona. He'd often tell stories of his friends that all went off in different directions...law..medicine, government..many of them did very well.

His mother still lived in Compton (by choice) and was almost burned out during the Rodney King problems.

Poverty in the US is often a transitory condition, as is high income. According to the Census data, people are constantly changing economic strata.

It is crowded. I visited for a week last year and was sad to see many of the changes. The center divider on Interstate 405 in Orange County used to be lined with Oleander. If y'all from other parts of the country aren't familiar with Oleander, it's a tall (6 or 7') bush with lots and lots of white and pink flowers that last most of the year. It was like the freeway was lined with large rolls of peppermint candy canes. It made the place feel like a treasured vacation destination.

The road got so crowded that they ripped out the Oleander and replaced with with a couple more lanes. The road debris used to slide under the Oleander out of site. Now it sits against the "New Jersey Barriers" in plain site. The place now bears a striking resemblance to the Cross Bronx Expressway, except for the occasional palm tree that sprouts up above the sound barriers that line the freeway.

Dont you think it is racist of you to believe that only BLACKS can suffer from depravation and not whites? Or is the deprevation that BLACKS suffer different than that of whites?

Dont you believe that set asides in contracts and school admissions for "minorites" are racist? Implying that they couldnt get it done on their own? Or is it a redress of past discrimination? Than why dont they have set asides for Jews and Orientals and others?

Dont you think its racist for whites to have to score HIGHER on exams then for their black counterparts to compete for the same position? Thereby implying that the BLACKS are substandard?

Dont you think that the USA and Canada and indeed Europe "pay off" certain groups........with "ENTITLEMENTS"......to keep the peace???? The US with its so called "minorities",namely Blacks and Hispanic.......and Canada and Europe with its Muslim population? Is there any reason whatsoever for Europe and Canada to permit able bodied young Muslims to eneter the country and have that country SUPPORT THEM? They do so.....so to tell the radicals......We are buying peace, dont attack us....PROTECTION MONEY!

When you call someone a racist there is basically no defense against it, and stops conversation. But in fact racism is like generalizations, profiling and actuarial study......and the world revolves around these industries.....insurance companies for instance, credit companies etc.

I agree

BusyBody and Roxanne69,

I agree with both you completely. Everything you said rings true. I face discrimation on a regular basis. They call it reverse discrimation!?! As a caucasian (white, whatever) I appreciate the small business programs that are available to me, but if I were african american or another minority (?) I'd have 2 or 3 times the grants (presents), funding, programs, etc.

I think it's a shame that a country which prides itself on ethnic diversity makes it more difficult on the majority (again - ?).

Everyone deserves an EQUAL chance to succeed. Not just the so called discriminated against.

I could say more but I'm trying to be polite.

Thanks for your great comments!

this is AMERICA, you have a right to speak......you wont....cause you are afraid of OFFENDING someone.....But THEY can say what THEY want, cant they?

BTW, the MINORITY businesses that get the presents are not really minority are they? They just have a TOKEN BLACK but really arent owned by them are they?

Only in America!

We are all equal.....some are MORE equal then others.

I still think it's pretty funny that of all the ridiculous time and money wasting projects our tax dollars go to, this is the one that causes people to get the most upset. Especially since reparation money hasn't even been handed out yet and probably never will.

True, the so-called black leaders calling for reparations sound like idiots, but the people who oppose the idea so passionately sound like even bigger idiots.

"I appreciate the small business programs that are available to me, but if I were african american or another minority (?) I'd have 2 or 3 times the grants (presents), funding, programs, etc." If you've got small business programs available to you and you're making money then great! Go make your money! When you're destitute and on the street begging, then you can complain.

How about spending our energy on something thats actually a real issue?

But you ARE a reationary dope. Comparing Welfare to Reparations is reactionary, silly, not thought out, meant to inflame, and not a worthy debatable point. You're a child.

Reparations are a legitimate issue, with precedent. German companies in business today that profited by Jewish labor during the Nazi era have been forced to pay compensation to Jewish organizations. There are businesses in America today like railroads and insurance companies that were founded and built on slave labor(and by pitiful wages paid to blacks after the Emanicpation Proclamation), and the current lawsuits do not ask for individual reparations to black families, but, like the German cases, they ask for adequate compensation be given to black social organziations.

If you think about the issues just a little harder you could avoid idiotic thread titles and maybe people won't piss on you so much -- or are you just after the piss on purpose so you can play martyr? ("Oh everyone's just going to hate mean old me for saying this! Ain't I the Angry Young Man? Mu-haha!")

Though the title was clearly meant to inflame, the article written by the Eli was thoughtful, complete and made a good case against reparations. I've read a few articles written by the fellow from Harvard Law who is spearheading this effort and while he attempts to build his case with precedents (Like the WWII example), it is still very weak and bears no comparison to the article quoted above.

But busbody didn't write the article. He extrapolated, like all reactionaries, what he wanted from the article to fit his preconceived and immature ideas of how the cosmos tilt. He's a dope.

I had a preconcieved notion that reparations aren't a viable policy before I read this article. The article stated positions that I was aware of and introduced some that I hadn't thought through completely, but nevertheless I agreed with it.

I haven't read many of Busybody's posts so I'm not going to draw a conclusion one way or another yet.

This whole reparations debate has degenerated into nothing more than a springboard for bigots (black and white) to start mouthing off. If anyone does have anything worthwhile to say, it's usually lost in the storm.

That's what most of the threads turn into, I think that's why I find myself posting on lit less and less. It's only the charming ladies that brings me back now and then. I must admit I enjoy reading posts of some people here too. I'll even admit that I enjoy a quick riposte with Redwave now and then. I like that he doesn't attack people very often, rather he spends his time attacking ideas.
