There are no background checks or seven day waiting periods to purchase a car, and anyone can go buy any kind of car they want and drive it off the dealership within the hour. The longest waiting period there is probably the drive to the dealership itself.

And you're perfectly free to buy pretty much any vehicle you want from your neighbour in five minutes.

But you CAN'T buy a car without the government knowing about it immediately. It's not yours until you register the sale with a public agency, and driving a car not so registered can get you in trouble. If we treated guns like that, it would at least help.

There is some evidence that allowing people to get permits to carry concealed handguns reduces the crime rate.

I am in favor of gun control laws that reduce the crime rate. I am opposed to gun control laws that raise the crime rate. I recognize that it is hard to tell the difference. The Second Amendment interferes with good gun control laws.

I think the use and owning of a gun should be treated the way the use and owing of a car is treated. It should be a privilege reluctantly granted by the government after paying fees and passing tests.

Quick…off the top of your head…how many “gun laws” do we have in the U.S.? In your mind, what is “good” gun control laws?

There are well over 20k Federal, State, and Local laws. That’s a lot of “law” to go sifting through. You’d think out of 20k laws, we’d have some consensus of what is good law and bad.

I do like your thought process on the use and owning of a weapon. I doubt we have the same idea of how to get to that point, but reasonable people can disagree.

Watch any British crime drama. Only nefarious characters have guns. The good guys who can't own guns are constantly trying to hide or escape from bad guys with guns. I watch these shows and think thank God in America we at least have the choice to defend ourselves and aren't just sitting ducks. Yes, I realize it is a fictional crime drama but that part really sticks out as an American viewer. We should make sure less crazy people have guns but repeal the 2nd Amendment? No.

Those are crime dramas. IRL, situations where British ciivilians would be safer if armed are EXTREMELY rare. So are situations where the police would be safer or more effective if armed with more than a club.
