That this thread got diverted from religion to race indicates the salience of White Christian Nationalism in America.
Then there's the "insurrectionary theory" of the 2A. It was not New Deal legislation but civil rights legislation that started so many white rural Americans thinking the federal government was growing tyrannical, and that they need to be armed to resist it. See certain public statements of the infamous Cliven Bundy.
More broadly, a lot of white Americans seem to think they personally need guns just to defend against the n-words. In The Turner Diaries, what finally provokes the White Nationalists to active revolt is federal gun-control legislation called the Cohen Act (of course), which allows no private ownership of firearms at all. (How this is squared with the 2A is never explained.) Around the same time, the SCOTUS rules that laws against rape are racist and therefore unconstitutional.
Even RW opposition to the general liberal/leftist commitment to economic equality is rooted at least in part not in libertarian principle, or belief in the superior efficiency of laissez-faire or supply-side economics, or fear of socialism as such, but in the fear it would raise nonwhites to social equality with whites -- and, worse, force white taxpayers to pay for it all.
