Remember when...

How about the viewmaster? that stereoscopic thing you looked through and the pictures were three-D when you focused it right.

Chemistry sets that had 'real' chemicals in them?

Oh yes. I remember those viewmaster thingies. The first time the boy next door and I played "doctor" in the closet there was a viewmaster involved. I remember the yelling my mom did when she caught us.

And the chemistry set was kept under my bed. Do you have any idea what other uses there are for those test tubes?

Drive ins are still here, my son went to his first last summer. It was a van full of boys on a birthday party, and they managed to find a van full of girls to giggle with.

Lots of good memories this morning.

Thanks guys.

To put my 'remembers' into perspective, I'm 48, and live in Australia.

~ I remember as a young child hearing in the early hours of the morning the clip clop of the milkmans horse as he pulled the cart down the street with the milkman running alongside.

~ I remember Mum leaving the front door of our house unlocked, always. It was considered rude if you locked the door, as it was a slur on your friends.

~ I remember Noddy and BigEars.

~ I remember when roast chicken was only eaten for Christmas Lunch. I also remember that one of the chickens from the backyard pen would 'go missing' just before Christmas.

~ I remember 'building bricks'.

~ I remember when bus fare to the city cost 15c... it's now $1.80.

~ I remember dolls cut out books. Cutting out fiddly clothes to fit onto a cardboard doll.

~ I remember when all we used to play with was a skipping rope or a yoyo.

~ I remember so much more, but most of it relates to my family and not life in general.

btw teach...

I remember drive ins...

I have to agree fond memories.

There's a drive-in not too far from where I grew up. It's still open and plays new movies. It's great.

A lot of the rest is lost on me... I'm a child of the '80s...

The first $700.00 calculators?

My dad got one of those! The thing was huge.

Your post also reminded me of Iron On Tee Shirts. No matter how careful you were part of the transfer always got stuck to the iron.

Yeah, Fizzies!

I don't know why I started to reminisce yesterday, but I am glad I did.

Guns, toy guns. Cowboy guns, military guns. Military toys in general. Lots and lots of violence, but no one shot up schools or wasted people at McDonald's. Might make a good study...

Flat top hair cuts, and that tube of crap you carried around to wax it up good.

Three TV channels if you were lucky and lived close to town.

New Beetle music.

Sneakers, one pair a year, cost under ten bucks. Better be high top Chuck's. Black. Remember how light your feet and legs felt? How fast you could run?

A red wagon, a very tall and dangerous hill - Summer Time.

A Flexible Flyer, same tall and dangerous hill - Winter Time.

(Emergency rooms, stitches, casts, scrapped knees and elbows, never healed during the summer, we wouldn't let them, we were too busy playing outside, climbing trees, jumping, playing war, so fourth, and so on)

No, thank you freakygurl. I used to have this site bookmarked. I love it.

I had this lunch box! Smelled like Baloney cheese and mayo, bad smell, bad...

DriveIns.... what fun those were ~smiling~

Hey those are still around here.

This may not be as "old" as some of the memories here but here goes:

I remember buying my first pack of Marlboro's (at age 15 :D ) for $1.35 ( wow was that only 8 years ago? )

He Man action figures

Lunch boxes

'80's rock groups (big hair)

I played with lincoln logs, hot wheels and legos

When MTV played music all day long

Sleds, wagons, and the shame of riding a "girl's" bike

Playing "doctor" :D

Bus fare was $0.25 now it's $0.60 (okay so that hasn't changed too much)

The Atari 2600, my first video game system

Lunches that consisted of bologna sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and kool-aid

Looking at my first naked woman from a National Geographic magazine

Thursday night skating parties (in elementary)

Ah, the nostalgia, the memories

Remember when Ishmael posted a similar thread? ;) I sure don't. Damn, I don't read all the threads!

So, you guys are young puppies. Let me see here.

Remember when Burger King sold hamburgers, a fish sandwich, and a chicken sandwich, and that was it?

Remember 'Mall' hair? I always wondered what was up with that. The girls looked great from the front, but from the side, or back, it looked like a sick poodle died on her head.

Remember when most TV shows were in black and white? Oh thats right I forgot...

Remember the Christmas Eve that HBO aired Ghost-busters as a surprise gift to everyone? Think it was 84.

Honey, I am twenty five and I remember most of that!I don't know about the mall hair, but everything else I do! Scary, isn't it, but mom always told me I was older than I seemed!

I remember that shit, too! How sad.

Nostalgia is relative....

The Gen-Xer's will fondly remember PS2/Xbox, and $2.00 per gallon gas!

Television was cool back when the Earth was new,

Ed Sullivan
Ted Mack's Amateur Hour
Red Skelton
Sky King
Lassie
Milton Berle
Roy Rogers/Dale
Daniel Boone
Davy Crockett
Howdy Doody
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits

*Black & White TV is more artistic!

Don Kirschner's Rock Concert
Solid Gold
Living Color
Laugh In
Saturday Night Live (Belushi/Ackroyd) :D

Schools....

When I was going through grades 2-6, my school had been built in 1859! The hardwood floors, the absolute lack of heating/AC, and the 40 kid classrooms were the best! Mrs. Rydell was an elderly teacher with the patience of time itself! We didn't whine about our building, we were learning at the established pace, and you never heard the term "reduced class size" like the whiners nowadays!
I went back there a year ago, it's pretty much intact, and has been changed to a senior center! Still had the same smells in it like when I was there!

*Another "remember", Brillcream & Groom and Clean were the only gels available for keeping a guy's hair in place! (No "Dapper Dan's") :D

TV was great, but so was the radio...

Please forgive me for what I am about to do, but I am about to destroy the spelling of this poor guys name. When we were in Europe, you got one TV channel. AFN, Armed Forces Network. That was it. Either that or German TV. Which wasn't always bad.

So music played a big role in our lives. There was one guy everyone waited for, and everyone taped, every week.

We got one channel of American radio also. They had to keep everyone happy, so we got Soul, Country, Big Band, etc... You needed a cassette player. The Germans couldn't come close with their radio stations. AFN was it for American Rock and Roll.

Kasey Kasem (I have no idea how to spell it) and America's Top 40. Played every Saturday morning. It was the only way for us to find out what was hot back in the states.

Friday night, late, came the other important man in our lives... Wolfman Jack. If you never heard the Wolfman, you missed something.
