What he was, was jumped.

Jumped - to beat someone up via a sudden surprise attack, usually as a group.

I'm an expert on lynching.

Theres a whole lotta misinformation bout black/white sex in the past.

Conventional wisdom posits white men raping black females, and blacks males hanged for raping white females. Both occurred and both were rare.

Colonial records reveal that Irish immigrant girls liked dark meat, and few of the black sires were hanged. Pre Civil War newspapers reveal that lotsa Southern girls eloped with black slaves, they generally brought the slaves with them to New York and skeedaddled to Canada. Southern boyz eloped with black girlz to Mexico and Cuba. Wealthy planters preferred New Orleans Quadroons and Octaroons, and these women werent field Niggaz.

Many of the lynchings were retaliation for assassinations and arson. That is political factions hired poor blacks to murder opponents and destroy their property. Blacks were hanged if their white patrons held public offices and justice was unlikely. Cop killing also guaranteed a hanging. The shelf life of a rural deputy sheriff was short. And when a deputy died at a moonshine still everyone knew who owned the still. Hangings also kept blacks from talking about their shine.
