Recommendations, anyone?

Heh. Notice I relied on mood and put in hardly any historical detail? ;)

But isn't mood what sets the people of one age apart from another? You can be meticulous with details, but all the descriptions of fashion and architecture mean nothing if you don't evoke the feel of the times.

I think that's why Holllywood so often crashes and burns when trying to portray historical events and the people that lived through them. They seem obsessed with historical accuracy in set design, yet persist in giving their characters modern sensibilities and moralities.

Don't sell yourself short. Mood is the true gen of capturing a moment in time. The rest is just backdrop.

Hi Jayne,

You give great wisdom. I think that's one of the reasons that Shanglan's work is so identifiable to many of us, he's one of the few can accurately portray the sensibilities of a different time. His characters feel different.

I'm really enjoying your posts. Thanks. ;)

Luck,

Ok, Jfinn... Watch OUT!!

You MAY have competition!

Ok, I've just found one amazing story that I can honestly say is is ALMOST (winks at Jfinn) as good as Jfinn's "The Human Condition". I would like to direct you towards "Heaven on Earth" by byIL85 . Like HC, it's got humor, love, a coming-out drama, but GET THIS: its also got rape and deep and pervasive pschological stuff as the main characters struggle to recover. Interestingly, the author has also elected for a first-person narration.

It also has something HC doesn't have, and that's some serious suspense and mystery. I'm on chapter 11, and right now my worry is not whether the lover's relationship will survive, so much as whether the lovers themselves will survive. Pretty intense.

If I were critical, however, and compare HC with HE, I would say that HE's author isn't quite as subtle in his character construction as Jfinn. Take for example how Jfinn created an incredibly memorable Aunt Livid in just two sentences. You won't find that in Heaven on Earth, who introduces noticably fewer characters. I would argue also that byII85 characters aren't quite as diverse and dynamic as Jfinn's.

Anyways, I think everyone should read it. Its a long one... 12 chapters! I'm on chapter 11, and I can say that so far its well worth it.

Ooo, I missed this! thanks for the tip.

Jayne

PS. I haven't forgotten I owe you an email.

Ok...

...just finished the story. Jfinn, if you end HC like this guy ends his story I seriously will never forgive you. It leaves me feeling frustrated.

Still, an incredible author. An active one as well, seeing that the final installation to the series was completed this month.

This is interesting...

The author has listed 2 other authors under "favorites": wavyscribe, and Gryffindor . From a cursory look, they appear to be authors into long drawn-out gay-male genres as well. And most of them are rated as "hot". I'll have to take a look at those when I've got the time.

Yeah, I saw that and I also know them both. Wavyscribe and Gryffindor (or Sarah and Michael respectively) are best friends and both are wildly popular writers over at Nifty. Tou can find most of their stuff in the top lists here too. I think Michael is still posting work, but Sarah has a paid gig now and no longer posts on free sites. Their styles vary a little but both write highly romantic stories loaded with characters, humor and a splash of suspense. You really should check them out.

Sarah especially has been hugely influential, doing a lot of mentoring with young writers and if you read many gay stories you'll probably see her mentioned in a bunch of credits. She's a real doll baby and one of the nicest people you'd ever want to talk to.

Oh WOW!

I just searched for Nifty on google and I came across an incredible erotica site. Until now, I haven't found any other sites like Literotica, free-sites with incest and gay/bi erotica. Other than Nifty, what other sites would you guys recommend?
