I'm looking for some really sad songs to put on a CD. Any help would be great. What's the saddest song you know. Try and leave out any country songs. :)

Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright (Shrek soundtrack)
Dust In The Wind - Kansas
Broken Vow - Josh Groban
Crying - Roy Orbison and kd lang
Yesterday - The Beatles
At This Moment - Billy Vera and the Beaters
Separate Lives - Phil Collins

Edited to add a few more songs

draaah was right... you are a folkrokker.
-blowing kiss-

What's the name of the song about scattered dreams and airplanes laying in pieces on the ground? The band wanted to surprise the singer by flying his girlfriend out to meet them on their tour, and her plane crashed, killing her. True story, I believe.

Blur - No Distance Left To Run

It's over
You don't need to tell me,
I hope you're with someone who
makes you feel safe in your sleep
Tonight,
I won't kill myself trying to stay in your life
I've got no distance left to run.

When you see me,
Please,
Turn your back and walk away,
I don't want to see you cause I know
The dreams that you keep...
That's where we meet,
When your coming down think of me,
I've got no distance left to run.

It's over
I knew it would end this way,
I hope you'r with someone who
Makes you feel that this life is a life,
One that settles down,
Stays around,
Spends more time with you
I got no distance left to run.

I'm coming home
So cold
Home...

Blur

It is such a great break up song, that just defines one man's view of his ex-girlfirend and his life at the exact moment he wrote the song.

Astonishing, moving, and I suggest you all go buy/download it somewhere!

Blur - a British Brit-pop band.

x

Green Day

Shit, I forgot how song that song is!

Billy Joe has a soft side!

Anyone heard Tenacious D's "Fuck Her Gently"?
That is a FUNNY song, so listen to that when down, people!

Spiritualized - All of My Tears.

Lord it's so hot and I ain't got a lot
Don't need much but I ain't satisfied right now
I just want water I just want an ocean
An endless river to wash away all of my tears.

Lord it's so hot and my heart's bleeding
Ain't been with you but it's you I'm needing right now
I just want water I just want an ocean
An endless river to wash away all of my tears.

When your hot and lord how it's steaminh
You gotta go back to the river babe
I just want water I just want an ocean
An endless river to take me back to my shame.

James Taylor - 'Fire and Rain'

"...sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground..."

some

Everybody Hurts - REM

In The Ghetto - Elvis Presley, et al

Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin

Last Kiss - The Cavaliers or Pearl Jam
Where've You Been - Kathy Mattea (it's country, but tough shit. I hate country and I love this song. Try it. Trust me. Really.)

Have you heard Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt". My god, it's sad. And the video, which goes back and forth between images of him now, old and ill, and footage of him when he was young, it's just devastating.

Saddest song I can think of is Otis Redding, "I've Been Loving You Too Long"

Where've You Been is just heartbreaking. Good call, Nora.

The Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot

*hijack*
You know the part about the church bells that chime 29 times for the men on the Edmund Fitzgerald? That church is only a couple blocks from my building, and I can hear it every November 11. It always brings tears to my eyes.

Thanks =) It's one of those songs that makes me weep like a pathetic little weeny-baby every time I hear it. Kind of embarrassing when it comes on in public spaces.
