Random Thoughts

Isn't it about time we just admit that we've taken the idea anyone can grow up to be President way, way, too far??

I had a random thought, then saw this and everything that followed and laughed so hard I forgot what I was thinking

If an English muffin is simply referred to as a muffin in the U.K. then what an (American) muffin called? e.g. Blueberry muffin.

Also a muffin. Which is confusing. Although muffins as in flattish breadcakes are perhaps less prevalent these days, whereas muffins as in fluffy chocolate (or whatever) mounds are everywhere!

We should call them American muffins, really, I suppose.

Ahhh... the mystery answered! Thank you. :rose:
Now I'd love a choclate chip muffin with my cofeee this morning. Mmm....

I tend to refer to breakfast muffins (the sort McDonalds serve), muffins (the sweet chocolate or blueberry ones) and bread rolls, which are sometimes called muffins, depending on where in the UK one lives.

They all taste good :D

I thought it was called a crumpet?

Oh no, a crumpet is something completely different. I adore a crumpet - all those little crevices for the butter to melt into, and then it running down your chin as you eat it. And the finger-licking afterwards...

I really want a crumpet now. I'd take a crumpet over a muffin (English or American), any day of the week :D

Um... that looks like what we would call an English muffin.

I have not had a crumpet in years. Now I want one.

They do, but they are subtly different. Spongier, slightly sweeter (I think).
It looks a LOT like a U.S. "English Muffin" but it's not. They are clearly related and I think "English Muffin" is the U.S. "imitation."

Ah... okay, thank you. :)

I can see how you might think that. Crumpets are more sort of doughy, muffins are more like bread.

This is a picture of muffins:

They are basically bread, but kind of flat, with a good crust top and bottom, although not tough. You split them, preferably by hand rather than with a knife to get a nice rough surface, then toast them, then slather them with butter.

Then they look like this:

Yum, eh? That's missing only a tiny smear of Marmite (it's OK, the Marmite crisis is now resolved :))

I'll shut up about muffins and crumpets now. ;)
