That story about the pizza place in Philly where you can pay an extra dollar "forward" and essentially anonymously buy a slice of pizza for a homeless person made me cry.

The sudden whoosh-snort sound of a stag's warning was repeated a few times just minutes ago, distinct and like snare percussion; then stopped. Then repeated again.

Brought to mind another night, a back country road under a black-as-coal night sky, white snow, with no flashlight. Walking fairly quietly yet any wild animal should have noticed my footfall sounds; except for the stag whose shape as he faced the road ready to cross it (I guessed) suddenly came in view. He turned toward me and I could see his face; must've been 10 feet away at most, then whoosh-snorted lightly and walked away quickly. Startling a stag! Wasn't on my bucket list. In hindsight, well maybe it should've...ha!

Because the center cannot hold...you are forcing groups of people with diametrically opposed worldviews, values, and ideologies into a zero sum game...it is like a couple in a bad marriage that is broken beyond repair but there is no option for separation or divorce...anger and resentment is going to build and continue to heighten until it explodes...empires rise and fall all the time...America is not immune...
