Every time I open my browser I'm bombarded screeds all talking about "Racial Equality." People are marching around with it written on signs. Advertisers are telling me how they're all for it. Great, and if you took a poll today and the question was, "Do you support Racial Equality?" I'd be shocked if you didn't get at least an 85% "Yes" response.

Fine, we're most all in agreement that Racial Equality is a good thing, something worth working towards. That's the easy part. Agreeing with a generalized goal takes absolutely no effort at all on anyone's part. Mouthing the platitude gets nothing done.

So let's talk about the hard part. Exactly what laws do you believe should be enacted to achieve that goal? Be specific and be prepared to defend your suggestion.

How about starting with reforms to law enforcement and the foster care system, both of which disproportionately impact Black people and POC... reform the bail process so that people don’t sit in jail just because they can’t afford to pay bail, standardize sentencing so that Black people don’t get longer sentences while white people get off with warnings/probation for the same crime, make federal funding for child welfare more flexible so that states can use it for prevention/family strengthening service rather than just for foster care and removing/separating families, remove the financial incentive to keep cells/beds filled in the for-profit prison system.

I’m not prepared to defend/debate my suggestions, however; as in my experience that will be deeply unsatisfying.
