...Snow...died on Tuesday from complications of a brain hemorrhage she suffered in January 2010, said Rick Miramontez, her longtime friend and public relations representative. She was 60. Known as a folk guitarist who made forays into jazz and blues, Snow put her stamp on soul classics such as "Shakey Ground,""Love Makes a Woman" and "Mercy, Mercy Mercy" on over a half dozen albums.

Snow's defining hit, however, was "Poetry Man," which she wrote herself. The song, anchored by her husky voice and a fluid guitar, was a romantic ode to a married man. It reached the Top 5 on the pop singles chart in 1975, and garnered her a Grammy nomination for best new artist.
I wasn't all that fond of her music, "Poetry Man" included, but I do remember when that song hit the airways and it's kind of a shock to learn that she passed away. :rose:

Stylistically, she was all over the map. She was the sort of female singer in the Janis Joplin/Grace Slick/Joni Mitchell vein. She sounded like only herself, and could never be mistaken for anybody else. God rest her soul.

I saw this elsewhere. She had what I'd call a smoky, bluesy kind of voice that leant itself well to Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith type songs. I thought 'Poetry Man' was a cool song when it came out.

RIP Ms. Snow. :rose:

I'm always torn when I read about the death of a celebrity younger than I am. On one hand it makes me feel old but on the other I cackle in schadenfreude that I've survived and he/she hasn't. But it's always sad . . .

How did I miss this news?

:(

Phoebe Snow has been a favorite of mine since Poetry Man. A singular talent. What a loss.
