You can host pictures online here for free and the site has the option of allowing you to compress the size of the pictures. It might help until you find a photo editing program you like.

Cat, you can download a trail version of Paint Shop Pro here. It's a pretty nifty program, perhaps not on the scale of Adobe Photoshop, but still a nice program. Thirty day free trial.
