I had to give a speech today (for speech class, go figure!). And I have come to the conclusion that I hate speaking! (I have to talk the class, it's a requirement)

Not just public speaking, just speaking period. I hate to talk on the phone! Face to face interaction is ok, but I'd rather listen than speak!

I am much better with writing. I express myself more when I write and open up more. That's why I like e-mail and message boards. Not when talking!

Plus, I hate the sound of my voice!

Ok, After that rant... I got a B on the speech.

Does anyone else feel the same way? Or even the opposite?

I read a survay a while back that stated for most people their #1 fear was public speaking, #2 was death. Which could lead you to think that if your at a wake you're better off being the one in the box than the one giving the eulogy.

I'm with you I generally dislike public speaking and I hate talking on the phone, unfortunetly I at work I spend 80% of my time speaking to large groups and most of the rest of my day on the phone.

oh well, you do what you gotta do.

Ah, public speaking. No worries, you'll do a GREAT job. I know you will. No need to be nervous.

Me Too

I hate speaking in front of a large crowd. I have done it on occasion and once with a big screen, that showed me at the microphone, so the people at the back could see and hear me ok.
I hated it, but I guess no one else picked that up, because they said after that I came across fine.
I agree that it is pretty high up on the list of most hated and feared things in people's lives.

I used to be terrified of any sort of public speaking. Sweaty palms, stuttering voice, sometimes even killer headaches. My Speech professor told me she could help me, but I was too nervous to allow her to try.

Then, a couple of years ago, the company I work for was introducing a new software to our employees. The project had been mine to initiate and set up, with training to be handled by the company that developed the software. There were well over 300+ people to be trained over a 3 week period. Well, wires got crossed, and people started to show up for a training for which there was no instructor. My sup came to me, being as it was my project, and begged me to do the training. I had 45 minutes to develop an entire 2 hour training.

The first day (4 sets of employees), my knees were knocking, palms sweaty, voice jittery. I cringed everytime some said they had a question.

The result? After 3 weeks I completely lost my fear of public speaking. I've found I feel very comfortable speaking in front of people. Mine wasn't a pleasant way to do it, but overcoming this fear CAN be accomplished.

And, hey, ya got a "B", so ya must have done SOMETHING good!

I used to be terrified of public speaking. I'm generally a quiet person, well until you really get to know me :) I took a communication course in college and every week you had to do a speech on a topic of your choosing. The first few times were nightmares but I did get over it. I find the more I did speeches, the more confortable I became in dealing with people and doing presentations.

I love it!

I love the control of the moment. Guess that is why I am a Dom.

The largest crowd was about 500 people. All educators. I loved every second of it.

I do it all day long in the class room.

But put me next to a new pretty woman, ahamina, ahamina... I turn very shy. Until I get to know them.
