WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania on Tuesday rebuffed a request for him to sit down for an interview and turn over documents to the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection, joining other allies of former President Donald Trump in trying to stonewall the committee.

“I stand with immense respect for our Constitution, the Rule of Law, and the Americans I represent who know that this entity is illegitimate, and not duly constituted under the rules of the US House of Representatives,” Perry said in a statement.

In a letter to Perry on Monday night, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Democratic chairman of the panel, said the panel had received evidence from multiple witnesses, including then-acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and then-acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue, that Perry had “an important role” in efforts to install Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark as acting attorney general.

The lawmaker’s refusal will test how far the committee is willing to go in its quest for information as members have so far resisted subpoenaing one of their own as they investigate the insurrection by Trump’s supporters and his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The letter is the first time the panel has publicly released a request to a fellow member of Congress as the members inquire about the details of Perry and other congressional Republicans who met with Trump ahead of the Capitol attack and strategized about how they could block the results at the Jan. 6 electoral count.

 WTF is he talking about?! This is the first objection to the committee based on House rules that I've ever heard of.

The composition of the committee isn't what was called for in its charter. It's really not a legit body, and it certainly isn't cop, judge jury and executioner.

Iove how Meadows refused to testify about text messages that he already admitted weren't privileged.

And those text messages....lmao....seriously Ingraham and Hannity.....

Their explanations were even better than the messages themselves

Pick a better example -- there was nothing sham or illegitimate about that.

Other than the trial was to remove a guy who wasn't in office. Even the Chief Justice spat on that laughable Star Chamber, and we got to watch the hapless dotard Leahy fumble through.

I think we'll find the committee does have enough authority -- which the courts will uphold -- to subpoena Perry if they're sufficiently resolute (a doubtful point), and to lock him up if he defies it.

Nothing illegitimate about that, or about Roberts opting not to be the judge. The chief justice is only required to be the judge in the case of sitting officeholders.

And the trial phase is for removal, kind of hard to do when there’s no one there, it was another Pelosi special, a sham in every sense of the word.

Under the circumstances, you could not reasonably expect the House not to impeach Trump, no matter who were Speaker.

A conviction would have prevented him from ever taking office again, a more than worthwhile thing to try for. And it was perfectly constitutionally legitimate.

More and more. it's becoming clear the Jan 6 event was a setup. May have been directed by the FBI.

Nobody has any reason at all to believe that, including you. It was directed by Trump. He summoned his supporters to DC, he addressed them and whipped them into a frenzy. Nobody else.

There are over 400 defendants that are still awaiting trial. Several defendants have plead guilty and not yet sentenced, meaning they are cooperating.....which will lead to more information being revealed in the future.

Premature speculation, to say the least.

Turning the entire farce into a Star Chamber, with roots in nothin but the bottomless hatreds of the Left.

"Star Chamber" is ridiculous hyperbole applied to a procedure that can impose no criminal punishments of any kind, and the roots were in Trump's very real and treasonous efforts to overturn a legitimate election. It even falls within the strict constitutional definition of treason -- making war on the United States.

of course it’s completely legitimate. Unlike the people that it is investigating. Where the fuck do you come up with this stupid shit? You just make shit up and say it in front of the whole world. Boy that takes a pair.

more and more it’s crystal clear you are a poster boy for our desperate need of the United States for quality mental health care……
