I think agencies are illegal. My understanding is that the UK did not legalize prostitution as much as there is a loophole that allows certain types of prostitution to exist. I think their view is what they cannot see they don't give two shit about. They just dont want hookers walking up and down the street.

I really like the prostitution laws where I live though, here it's legal to sell your body for money, but it's not legal to buy it. In other words, they were originally forced or coerced into it against their will, and now have little recourse to get away from an abusive pimp/owner. The moral and health issue is only part of it. Also, as far as street walkers go, while there may be many who would visit a red-light district, there are few who would actually chose to live in one, and raise a family in one. It would make more sense to have it in a legalized brothel or private sex club out of public view- and there would of course need to be a way to ensure that the sex workers are not coerced or exploited in any way.

A couple of alternative rag journalists here in the Phoenix area started Backpage. Running all of that out of business for all of the reasons you stated above is why sex workers who were able to contract for their services with customers directly and cut out the pimps find themselves with less safe options.

If we're having an honest conversation about prostitution I suspect that the biggest problem is that many sex workers love drugs more than they love themselves which is how they find themselves turning to prostitution as an easy way to support their habit while not being willing or able to hold down conventional employment because of their addictions.

Today, we live in a society that places no stigma at all on promiscuity and for all of the same reasons that someone with a drug habit might turn to prostitution I don't see any particular reason why someone without a drug habit could not potentially find it just as appealing.
