Prostitution

Prostitution has been legalised in New Zealand so they do pay taxes but at the same time can claim money back. To work in the brothels they must have STD checks done at certain time frames.

The big problem that we have is that now we have brothels on the same street as schools as the council bylaws can't/won't prevent them. People who live next door to the girls that work from home have all sorts of horny idiots turning up at their house looking for the prostitute at all hours of the day and night because they got the house number wrong.

One thing I find is alot of people say yeah make it legal just not in my backyard. Sadly with making it legal there is not much the police can do about the associated behaviour of the clients drinking on the street and talking to young girls that are not prostitutes but just walking home.

It's the number one occupation where women have a natural advantage over men. When this is combined with the fact that 99.99% of the customers are men, it is a one way economic exchange. If prostitution was legal, it would only be a matter of time before all the wealth on the planet was controlled by prostitutes.

Imagine a world where every man's landlord was a whore, every man's boss was a whore and every man's wife or girlfriend was a whore.

As long as men control shoe companies, they'll get that money right back.

Why is prostitution illegal?

I am fairly certain this is the reason:

Leviticus 21:9: And the daughter of any priest, if she defiles herself by playing the harlot, she defiles her father: she shall be burned with fire.

Leviticus 19:29: Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.

...
thats a terrible reason :p

I see the makings of a sci-fi story.

The sad fact is that not all prostitution is voluntary. Some hookers are just poor women trying to feed their family and exchange sex for a can of corn.

If anyone thinks it's not happening in THEIR street, think about this -
A friend of mine who worked in the industry for a while, set up her private brothel in a very high-class street in one of the better suburbs of Perth.
There were only two girls, her and one other, but they did a roaring trade.
Appointment only, and up to 15 clients each, 6 days a week.
Two doors down lived one of the richest men in the state.

It can be anywhere... maybe even in your street.

There you go again James, ... stating a bald truth in the face of philosophy.

The gal next door sells sex. It took me a while to discover whats-up but I found her website, and all the other evidence fell into place. Her 'pimp' is an old codger who handles the website and credit-card payments, etc.

I've met plenty of women who lease motel rooms for webcam sessions. They work while the kids are at school.

If this is what you say is 'not voluntary' then most people are not voluntarily working :\

Nevertheless, some girls/women are forced into by someone else, and that's horrible. Selling your body for sex isn't the same as working in a factory or sitting at a desk all day, no matter how much everyone wishes they didn't have to work. Sex is personal and invasive, and if the woman didn't choose it for herself, it's basically rape, over and over.

Prostitution is legal in most states in Australia and all of New Zealand. Most of them are small operations operating discretely from rooms in suburban shopping areas.

For many reasons, but health and taxation are two that are valid.

Unless you can prevent a prostitute from "freelancing" you cannot monitor health concerns or adequately calculate income for purposes of taxation.

The other reasons are mostly morality related and have no particular validity.

But if you're looking for work, nobody is really stopping you.

Yeah, instead, put them into the back ally with the coat-hanger...

Can you think of a more stupid response?

Really???

The local mall could really do with some more walk-in traffic...

When I said prostitution, I meant

- The practice or occupation of engaging in sex with someone for payment.

not

- a state of subjugation or captivity often involving burdensome and degrading tasks

So, yes some women are forced into it by someone else, but I would say by far, not most.
And if it were legal, and regulated, it would be far easier to help those who need it, rather then just rounding up and arresting everyone.

Prostitution is legal in the UK with conditions. Soliciting is illegal. Running a brothel is illegal. One woman on her own is legal.

When I had a secondhand bookshop, one of the local prostitutes occupied a house next door but one. Some of her customers would browse in my shop, sometimes buy and leave their purchases 'to be collected within the hour'.

She bought books from me, some for herself, some for her 'waiting room'.

I persuaded her to join the local Chamber of Commerce (I was the VICE-President at the time) because she was operating a legitimate and profitable business. She offered discounts to fellow Chamber Members. I didn't ask whether any members used the discount.

Her speciality was older customers, often pensioners. Her neighbour, the house between my shop and the prostitute's house, sometimes complained about the noises from 'the dungeon' but admitted that since the noise was intermittent and only during the day, it wasn't as bad as the previous tenants who had played loud music into the early hours. Their concerns stopped once another Chamber member installed (at a discount) improved sound-proofing.

It is my belief that making prostitution illegal exacerbates the negative issues associated with it. It gives prostitutes no incentive to keep up with their health checks, it gives the customers no incentive to treat them with any respect, and it limits the prostitute's ability/willingness to call for help if they are being mistreated. Letting criminals run the business is a guarantee of corruption and mistreatment.

London is riddled with brothels then because many escorts share a flat with another escort and a "date" can be a in call or out call.
