Prostitution- The morality thread

So, there is already a thread which questions the need to legalize prostitution. But, the objections that I saw there were mostly based on ethics and morality.

I am pretty sure most people will say that it is morally reprehensible etc. Wondering if there are any counter claims. Or are our moral compasses in sync on this point?

Is this another thread about picking up kids in a school zone?

There's not much in this world more honest than someone who has the guts to profit from their own skin.

I don't think it's morally reprehensible as long as the prostitute is sober, fully consenting, not being exploited, paid a decent amount, regularly tested and treated with respect.

I couldn't do it myself but that doesn't mean I judge the people who do.

...I find more moral issue in drunken one night stands, where the people are too sloshed to make fully informed consent, where judgement is clouded, where contraception is an easily messed up fumble.

So, why it it WRONG for someone who is looking to get paid for sex?

I mean, if they are an adult and they choose to earn a living trading sexual favours. Why?

this, pretty much, but let's include 'taxed' in there as well.

having said that, i'm am quite sure (oh oh, certainty's always a problem) most prostitutes aren't working in the sex trade because they quite like the work and the hours. i don't know the statistics, but you can bet they're heavily weighted that a sex-worker chooses prostitution because of debt, exploitation, drug-dependency and the idea they can sell themselves fast enough, often enough, to make their problems go away.

Eh? Your OP asked for counter-claims to the "it's morally reprehensible" argument. I don't have anything against people who get paid for sex or people who pay for it. What makes you think I do?

Sorry, that was not directed to you. It was an open question. I noticed on the other thread that lots of people objected to it morally. But didn't substantiate any further than saying it was icky or sleazy.

if there were safe, clean, tested prostitutes who johns could visit without fear of arrest, i wonder if the amount of johns going to desperate street walkers would fall... one would hope so.
is there enough help for women who are resorting to prostitution through desperation? surely that's the only way to reduce street walking.

i think that might gradually change if the sex trade were legalized, protected, and eventually the taboos might even go away.

that's because so many people are dim. they cannot differentiate between ''i find it distasteful & offensive and i wouldn't do it.'' and, ''it is wrong and should be illegal.'' :)

I'm thirsty but too lazy to get out of bed and get some water

First world problems

As long as it's adult and consensual, I'm fine with them charging what the market will bear.

I don't think there's anything morally wrong about sex. I don't see why selling it would be morally wrong.

If we are all okay with it. How come our knee jerk reaction is, not for me?

Out of curiosity, how many women in this thread have worked as prostitutes? If you haven't, why not?

it should be an open, legitimate, clean and honest business for anyone engaged in it, off the streets - all that jazz.

some of it exists, certain 'specialities' shall we say, purely because of their taboo nature. for the man or woman looking simply to engage in a sexual encounter with a willing, healthy, available-at-the-right-price partner, then taboo should't even come into it. it's a financial transaction.

personally, i wouldn't choose to be a prostitute (assuming i'm not desperate and all the other stuff mentioned before) since i don't believe i should be selling what i'd give freely to someone i'd want to have sex with. it wouldn't feel right, and i would feel less than happy with myself reducing my flesh to a matter of simple finances with no emotional context.

i'm all for open heart surgeons rooting around in people's chests, i'm all for punks having pink hair as a form of self expression, i'm all for swimming as a healthy exercise, i'm all for women who like being on top going on top, and i'm all for adoption... but not for me.

it's just personality and personal taste. morality doesn't come into it.

just answered this in my post above. my answer is right for me, and i'd not dictate it as right for the next person.

So is Richard_Daily the only person who is morally against Prostitution?
