Considering what a vintage WW II warplane goes for these days. That's a whole lot of money gone to scrap.

Spitfires are like 3.5 million bucks.

If you like warplanes and are ever in SW Ontario the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is a must.

One of two Lancs still flying.

We used to go see it when it was a static display in Goderich.

My dad when he was in RAF worked on Avro Lincoln bombers and Vampire fighters. He was an armaments mechanic. 20mm cannons were his thing.

As a kid I delivered papers to an Hawker Hurricane pilot who flew 94 sorties before the end of the war. A friend that still lives there spotted him last week driving his station wagon around town. :)

Cool. I used to know two B-17 pilots from WW2. They both passed away in '12, withing two weeks of one another. Both were soft spoken gentlemen who meant exactly what they said.

I knew an old fellow who was a navigator on a RAF B-24 Liberator flying out of India. They would parachute commandos into Burma. Usually an officer and a half dozen native types. The planes captain was 22 and the oldest guy. They called him 'Pops'.

The B-24 may have been the most important warplane of WWII as it allowed the closing of the Atlantic gap during the Battle of the Atlantic.
