:confused: Isn't one of the reasons for using an optical mouse the fact that one doesn't have to use a mouse pad? And another, that one doesn't have to clean the bloody thing?

Cleaning your computer mouse is quite easy. You can do this with the computer on, if you want (I have, many times), but it is safer to turn your computer off, first. God forbid you accidentally click on something during this cleaning.

First...
Turn your mouse upside down and take the ball out. You just twist the area around the ball counter clockwise to get it to open.

Second...
You take the ball out, get you a lint free cloth, and soak it in isopropyl alcohol (did I spell that correctly?), and roll the ball around in this cloth to clean it off. When you have it clean and dry, it will have no shine to it, and slightly tacky to the touch. When you dry it off, but be sure you don't get any lint on it, because that will just get clogged up in the works.

Inside the hole where the ball goes, there are some rollers. One of those rollers is also a switch. Dab some alcohol on your finger and saturate those rollers with it. You want to clean any gunk off the surface of the rollers, and also make sure they roll freely, like a miniature roller-skate. Most of these rollers are white, so it will be easy to tell when they're clean.

No need to worry about drying them off. But you can put that lint free cloth in there, and dab it on them, if you want. The roller with the switch will move in and out, as you press on it. Don't get carried away with it, but clean it off just as you do the others. There will probably be three of these rollers.

When you're done with the rollers and the ball put it back in and twist the cover back on, counter clockwise. It will only go about a quarter of a turn, but make sure it's snug. You don't want the mouse ball coming out and bouncing across the room. Especially, if you have cats or dogs. It could get chewed on and never be the same.

Lastly, check your mouse pad. It should be free of any cookie crumbs, breadcrumbs, dirt, etc., because that ball you just cleaned will pick that crap up and become dirty all over again. Keep that kind of crap off the mousepad and your mouse will stay clean longer.

You can also dab some alcohol down the cracks of the buttons, if you want. Again, don't get carried away with it, but getting alcohol down between them will allow it to get to the contacts and clean them.

If the surface of your mouse is nasty, you can clean it off with the same alcohol. It will soon look and work like new.

That's it. It's very easy to clean a mouse. They get dirty very easily, but even though they don't cost very much, all of the funny jerking around they do us almost always just because they are dirty inside.

Mice are easy to clean. Hold them by the tail and dunk them quickly into water, followed by a rub-down with a clean washcloth.

Careful of the little claws.
 
I thought sure somebody would say something about cleaning the mouse's balls. :rolleyes:

Exactly how I do mine, except I add one step: for the black sticky gunk on the inner rollers that doesn't come off easily even with Iso, I take a tiny "mirco screwdriver" and scrape the evil stuff off.
