A few years ago I read a short story by Poppy Z.Brite in an anthology of Halloween tales; I was impressed. I just read WORMWOOD, her short stories collection. Theyre horrible but not very scary. Crap.

I thought that one was pretty good.

Thing is I look for interesting I am really at the point there is nothing that is going to scare me.

Reality is creepier than fiction these days.

I borrowed his first two books off a friend. I didn't like Drawing Blood too much and enjoyed Lost Souls. I thought it would be the other way around as I'm not a big vamp story fan.

Seemed like he fell off the radar after a lot of early hype. The bottom did fall out of the horror fiction market at that time, which might have had something to do with it.

Her writing is great but theres nuthin under the hood. Reminds me of a 56 Bel Aire with the hardtop and a small 6 (235) under the hood.

Yeah, unless Wiki is hoaxing he prefers to go by Billy Martin now. I'm pretty stone-headed on transgender matters, so I'm not sure of the correct usage when looking at works written in the past. If in doubt seems safest to use the one they prefer to go by now, I think.

Oh, goodie, a tangent!

It's polite to pretend that a person's entire past history has been erased and that they were always male-- or female. And for some people that can be true. But not when the person has made a public career based on the gender they were before the transition.

Poppy Z. Brite/Billy Martin (and yes, very hot-or-miss as an author, and his work started falling apart when he started transitioning, IMO) and also Pat Califia are two examples of that kind of wrong headedness. I am fine with private folks rewriting their own private history, but-- Califia offered something very rare and important-- a role model for butch women, for two decades... And now she wants to pretend that never happened? Nuh-uh. No way.

No, you are pretty much right on the money. It's why I'm not writing effective fiction right now. And honestly, one reason I was such a good writer was because of my frustration over my circumstances-- I was able to shunt it into some damn good writing.

Them's the breaks. I get through this period and I'll find a new source of unhappiness, and get some good shit out there again.
