A few years ago I read a short story by Poppy Z.Brite in an anthology of Halloween tales; I was impressed. I just read WORMWOOD, her short stories collection. Theyre horrible but not very scary. Crap.

Try Drawing Blood, if you ordered that one. Like a lot of authors, Brite was hit or miss.
If you're in the horror mood, try F. Paul Wilson's "Soft and others"
Couple of really good ones.
I ordered EXQUISITE CORPSE.
I borrowed his first two books off a friend. I didn't like Drawing Blood too much and enjoyed Lost Souls. I thought it would be the other way around as I'm not a big vamp story fan.
Seemed like he fell off the radar after a lot of early hype. The bottom did fall out of the horror fiction market at that time, which might have had something to do with it.
Lost Souls was really the one I meant, although I liked the imagery and idea behind Drawing Blood.
Lost Souls is Brite's take on vampires; Drawing Blood has more of a fantasy element to it.
Yeah, Drawing Blood looked like it would be the more interesting, but it didn't quite click for me.
I haven't tried out any of his short story collections, are they any good?
Hers.Poppy is a woman.
Like I said, Brite is hit or miss.

Brite will pull out your fingernails for calling her a woman.
I don't get it. She says she's now a gay male; with a vagina no less. She's either psychotic or droll.
Oh . . . really? I must have missed that somewhere. The books I have show a woman who used to be a stripper. Well, we can't exactly trust the dust jacket, can we?
ETA: Just checked Wiki and Brite's website. I guess he does prefer to be referred to as a man. My apologies for my ignorance about that.

Oh, goodie, a tangent!Yeah, unless Wiki is hoaxing he prefers to go by Billy Martin now. I'm pretty stone-headed on transgender matters, so I'm not sure of the correct usage when looking at works written in the past. If in doubt seems safest to use the one they prefer to go by now, I think.

Poppy Z. Brite/Billy Martin (and yes, very hot-or-miss as an author, and his work started falling apart when he started transitioning, IMO)
Because you lose your creativity when you're trying to be what you were not meant to be. All the creative energy went into reinventing her past.
Now the LC bashing can start for rendering a politically incorrect statement in a day and age where its only freedom of speech if no one is offended by it.
Our age loves pretend. If you can pretend youre a boy you can pretend youre a unicorn or a college grad.
It's not about pretend it's about not being happy with ones self and where years ago people sucked it up and did what they could to get through.
Now this society of entitlement had changed that thinking to you should never ever ever have to be unhappy or uncomfortable about anything and you should get an unlimited supplly of "undo's and redo's as if life was a word document.
People like that try to change because at the end of the day they cannot love themselves and their self loathing drives them to want to be anything, but what they were born to be.
No, you are pretty much right on the money. It's why I'm not writing effective fiction right now. And honestly, one reason I was such a good writer was because of my frustration over my circumstances-- I was able to shunt it into some damn good writing.Because you lose your creativity when you're trying to be what you were not meant to be.
