Poor Editors

Well, all of my stories would have stopped after a few threads if I didn't keep writing on them. It's not the editor's fault if noone else is writing on his stories (well, it may be his/her fault, if it's a story noone likes).

In fact, the only story of mine that really did this collaboration thing right is Summer Road Trip, where essentially, SlaveDragon and I alternated threads.

Yeah, I hear ya. It's especially hard with large stories, since prospective writers are less likely to read through the 17 prevoius threads carefully enough to feel comfortable adding on yet another one.

My Live-In-Slave is a pretty good compromise; it's essentially me and one other author and we trade off a lot.

Its also very hard since there are quite a few people whom seem to view putting one or two lines down counts as a thread...

I agree with Torg on this that in almost all cases I think somewhere between 300 and 800 words makes a good workable and readable length. I also agree that there are way to many two or three sentence threads. I have found only a couple of times out of almost a thousand threads I have written, that a short transition thread like that is needed to make the story work.

I have to say I agree with pretty much everything here, but that isn't very helpful so i'll go into some detail.

Short, bad grammar, ALL CAPS threads. I bundle these together as it's what usually happens, many great ideas & great threads i have seen, have been ruined (from my noobish observation anyway) or simply stopped because of these. Although i have to admit my grammar & spelling aren't allways what i would wish them to be, blame hanging out in chat rooms & such

Epic stories. Because of the scale of some stories, it's hard to add threads & stay true to the original intent, this also occurs on smaller scale stories but more so in the larger ones. Also the ones such as Ultimate Fanfiction & Create a Fembot have alot of potential but since they're so huge only certain options get taken.

I'm sure there are more things which occured to me while i was reading this thread but i have a mind like a sieve & as such they've disappeared, happens when you haven't been around since the start, also happens when reading stories, i often find it daunting to read some of the 20thread+ stories because I may want to see only a specific aspect that occurs later on, but have to read alot of the earlier stuff for it to make sense, that's nothing to do with editors & writers tho, so just ignore me, i tend to ramble sometimes

Pehaps this is something for CHYOO3. Maybe we can have settings that mean that when you set up a story you can select thread conditions, e.g. "Minimum X words", or "NO ALL CAPS THREADS", etc. Any that happen to have good reason to break the conditions need prior approval from the editor.

As for hulkda, how has that guy managed to write 172 approved threads? If there were ever a CHYOO awards, I think he would win "Worst Writer" hands down. I mean, his threads don't even make sense! Hmm...[ponders possibility of a CHYOO awards]...

Atomic Kitten

Oh god, I was reading Atomic Kitten, and it was hilarious! I mean, the story's easing along and then, BAM! "SUCK OR SCREAM." Totally out of character. Misspelling(sp?) {FIRST_NAME}, yeah, I did that at first, but he's got 172 approved threads? I have more than that, but only barely.

You could pull some of his threads to use as a lesson guide: "This is what poor grammar looks like." "This is an example of ignoring previously established character traits." "This is an example of a thread that's too short."

On the plus side, I've decided to submit a couple threads to Atomic Kitten later on, since it does look like it has a lot of potential.

Edit: never mind; it's a lost cause.

I'm the sub-editor for My Live-In Slave and the primary editor gave me permission (in a message) to edit his threads. He's a great writer as far as material, but English isn't his first language and there are usually a few errors in his threads. When I tried editing threads of his, instead of getting the usual thread to alter as I see fit, I've given a blank "page" to write on. Do I need to copy his threads into a word processing program then repost them? Does he need to do anything special to let me edit his work? I've been probably more nervous than I need to be about this, but I don't want to risk messing things up.

Does a sub-editor have the power to edit threads?

Ehum, I deleted roughly 20-25 threads from a story I have adopted, all of them being "top-notch" hulkda adds... so the his number of approved threads was probably something like 200 or more.
And I still don't understand why the Olsen twins would suddenly appear in the middle of the english countryside, in a story about british celebs?

Semi-editor? Does that even work?
As far as I know, it's a fancy title, but completely broken. I've tried editing threads as a sub-editor (for reasons similar to UncolaMan's), and so pasted the text into the blank window, did the editing, pressed the button and... voila! No changes made at all.

Don't know if its been fixed, but the last time Torg said anything about it (a couple of weeks ago, I believe), it hadn't.

Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou! I have seen one thread from hulkda that actually added to the story. It was a whole 100 words.

But hopefully you can approve or deny threads as a Sub-editor.
