Pontiac to bring back the GTO!!!!!

Well...tell us more. I got a hunch they are gonna re-badge the new Holden Monaro as the GTO (Holden is the australian arm of General Motors)

Post more about it Koala, especially links and pictures

GM is almost done cannibalizing their incredible sports car / muscle car history with shitty plastic front wheel drive cars.

Who thought that one day the Monte Carlo SS could get beat down in a drag race with a stock 4 cylinder Nissan / Honda / Toyota?

I think we need Chef's opinion

on the Holden (even tho' he's a Ford kinda guy). What do they say about it on the street?

With GM Stopping production of the Firebird and Camaro it is a sad day indeed. Time to bring back the GTO! There is no substitute for cubic inches!:)

If it weren't for the incredible performance of the new design Corvette, they'd be out of the performance car biz altogether.

Front wheel drive perfomance car is an oxymoron. Drag racing maybe, but a rear wheeler will knock the socks off of ANY front wheel drive once you have to turn a corner. Try a 'power drift' in a front wheel drive anything, and I'll wave at you sitting there picking the corn stalks out of your teeth while I slide by in my '63 Studebaker Avanti.

SHIT, it's about god damn time GM has done something smart within the last 10 or so years.:)

There's nothing smart about what they're doing. The "new" GTO is a travesty. (It may be a nice car, but it is no GTO.)

GM is f*ing up left and right. 2002 is the last year for the Camaros and Firebirds and the current Impala makes me weep.

edit - next time, I won't type without my glasses, 2003 should have been 2002

When I think of GTO I think of 389 ci multiple carburation and a nice shifting 4speed! Could you see GM building something like that today!:D

Sorry about that Kitten Eyes. Didn't realize that the new GTO would be an Australian import.

It has nothing to do with it being an import. The WRX is a kick ass import.

The GTO muscle cars were eight cylinder, rear wheel drive beasts, as were the Impalas. They were all raw cubes, pure motor. Granted, at least this time GM did pick a V8, rwd, but it is not the same caliber as the old GTOs.

edit - I read the article on the Holden, it looks like they filling the Camaro's shoes with that one.

Ok, now I see what you are saying. I just woke up about an hour ago.

They'll never build 'em like that again.

But do you really expect that? You can't go home again--it's not the '60s anymore, automotively or any other way.

Ford made 5-million Model As. The next time they came out with a 4-cyl, 4-speed that sat four comfortably, it was the Pinto. You can't go home again.

The funny thing about GM is all this trying to capitalise on the old names. The current Impala is not what I think of as "Impala;" I hate that commercial with the guy at the dealer, and the overview of the '59 ragtop--please. It's insulting.

At least Ford didn't call the Pinto a Model A.

The Impala commercial sucks! I understand that you cant go home. I just would like to be able to afford a real GTO to have as my toy car! To think that I used to have one right out of high school and it ended up in the junkyard frustrates me.:)

Keep the real ones alive.

I know--I even get nostalgic every time I see a '65 Biscayne. (My old man was a cheapskate.) But I think, if only. . .
