who's your favorite musical act?

ed

p.s.: my answer later, as always, yadda yadda yadda...

My absolute favorite musical act is Fleetwood Mac. I liked the lineup that included Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, but I'm also quite fond of their English blues band days. And Christine McVie's voice.

Oh, wait. You didn't want to know why.

eilan, i have to confess that i'm surprised: i'd have thought you too young to be a fleetwood mac fan. :>

my favorite act: bruce springsteen. that's in part b/c i first imprinted on bruce's born to run album re: what i thought rock should be like in the early 80s. i love bruce's tunes (and yes, even his voice) b/c i think he's a superlative songwriter.

My musical tastes have taken me to a HUGE spectrum of musical concerts ranging from The Three Tenors to Judas Priest, and I have to say that Neil Diamond has always been the tops.

Yeah, I get that a lot. :p

I think Collective Soul is my fave...they put on a great show. Running a close second would be Black Sabbath and KISS, Coming in last would be the new band Velvet Revolver which is basically Guns and Roses without that asshole Axel Rose

Hmmm can't pick just one.... although I think overall Sergio Mendes is my favorite act. Started listening to his music when I was around 14 and was hooked ever since. But there are these periods that I play his music a lot and now is not one of them. I like all kinds of music and it very much depends on my mood what I'm listening to. Shortlisted and at this moment it would be something like this....

  • Brand New Heavies
  • Faithless
  • Billy Joel
  • Charles Aznavour
  • Harry Connick Jr
  • Lounge Music
  • Steely Dan

Oh and the list could go on and on and on...

Fleetwood Mac is nice too although it's been ages since I listened to their music. Nice newcomer is Joss Stone. OK, I'll stop :D

If I have to pick one, I would probably say Bob Dylan....just love the lyrics.

I've always wanted to see Bob Dylan in concert... haven't had an opportunity yet, though.

My concert-going experience is rather limited. I've really only ever been to rock and alternative shows. Within these genres, I'd really love to see 311 - I've heard they put on a really fun show. But of the shows I have been to, I can think of few that could be considered exceptional. I saw Godsmack back in 1997 before they released their self-titled debut, and again in 1998 when they were just starting to become well known. They had an amazing knack for getting the entire crowd into the music. When I saw them in '98, they filmed the footage for the music video for the song "Whatever" at the show. I'm actually in the video for a split second, crowdsurfing. It's my little claim to fame. I haven't seen them since, however, and I'd be curious to see how stardom has changed them.

Primus puts on a good show. Days of the New is another memorable show. I saw Caroline Spine and Cool for August (nobody knows them, but I think they're great) together in concert, and what I remember most about that show is that neither band allowed mosh pits to form. It let the crowdsurfers be safe and everyone else was just able to enjoy the music.

Candlebox put on the worst show I've ever seen. I like their music, but they aren't any good live. They also spent their entire set insulting the audience between songs. By the end of their set, more than half of the people had just walked away.

One of my friends is hugely obsessed with Tori Amos. I enjoy some of her music, so I've told her she needs to drag me to a show sometime. She tells me they're amazing experiences.

Back in 1999, I gave my hubby tickets to see They Might Be Giants for his birthday. I wasn't able to go with him at the time, and horribly regret it. He said it was the single most entertaining show he's ever been to - they perfomed all their songs using giant, 8'-tall puppets.

there are a lot of ways to answer this question... but GENERALLY speaking, just about anything in the prog rock spectrum. genesis, yes, rush, elp, floyd, et al.

when you look at it from a PERFORMANCE standpoint, the field opens a bit further. this would include the prog rock bands plus: clapton, rod stewart, ej, bj, mccartney, the who, stones and on and on.

Lets see

  • Linkin Park
  • Breaking Benjamin
  • Three Days Grace
  • Evanescnece
  • Seether
  • Eminem
  • The Game
  • 50 Cent

Thats about what i listen to and lots in between.

It's a coin flip between Metallica or Queensryche.

I grew up listening to both of them and have a hard time deciding who's a better showman, Geoff Tate or James Hetfield.

Oh and saw Queensryche 7 times, Metallica 5.

my all time fave is QUEEN :D

sweet! is it just me or was innuendo the best album they did... making it all that much sadder to have lost freddy when we did.

I really like Pink Floyd (obvious from my AV)... I can always put them on the machine and it's a wonderful thing.

But, what I choose at any given moment depends on my mood (& sometimes who I'm with)... could be anything from Sinatra to Disco, Hendrix to Paganini, Shankar to Merle Haggard, James Brown to... well, you get the idea. I love music.

I'm also thinking Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry the 8th. One of my favorites.

rick wakeman kicks ass! i saw him with ALL of yes in the union tour ('91-ish?) what a fantastic show... MSG, in the round... whew.

Hmmm, I was probably changing diapers that night

i'm 99% sure it's available on DVD... i keep meaning to look for it but never think of it at the right time.

it was truly awesome...

wakeman, white, bruford, anderson, howe, squire, rabin, kaye. what a lineup.

the ABWH tour before it was none too shabby either.

think Collective Soul is my fave...they put on a great show.

I've seen them once, and to be honest, the singer couldn't even stand up straight, drunk, stoned, whatever. It was a horrible show.

Best show I've ever seen is LIVE. They are incredible. It didn't hurt that they had bits of Monty Python in between sets. I've seen the Cure once too, and they put on a very enjoyable show, if a little less energetic than I expected.

I'd love to see Tool or APC live.

For just everyday listening, it's all of the above, with a bit of everything tossed in: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Koko Taylor to Mudvayne, a little bit of country (must be a great song), Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks, and the list could go on and on.

I recently saw a band that I don't know the name of, an older blues band in an outdoor cafe in New Orleans, and I literally swooned.

I don't see enough live music, period.

i was gonna say something too, ed, but figured i'd let it soak a while.

personally, i think that music is just supposed to be fun and nourish the right side of your brain. if it does that, who cares what form its in, right?

i should point out, however, that i will judge a person's musical taste in ONE situation... people who listen to country music (the real shit or the modern, pop versions of it) are on my list... not because of the music but because it's a marker for other personality traits that will likely combine to indicate a rabid redneck.
