I haven't seen 'Seabiscuit' yet, but my favourite is 'Lost in Translation'. Amazing movie.

Still, like any pre-LOTR Peter Jackson fan, I'll be rooting for 'The Return of the King'. The mere concept of the Academy giving an award to the director of 'Meet the Feebles', 'Bad Taste' and 'Braindead' is too delicious to pass. :D

I voted 'other' because "21 Grams" was the best film I'd seen in years. Truly brilliant work and acting.

Lost in Translation is my pick for film of the year so I voted for it. But, I think that LoTR is definitely in the drivers seat.

I'd be happy with a split decision, Best Picture to Lost, Best Director to Jackson. But I don't think it's going to happen.

I saw 21 Grams as well and I thought it was an absolutely brilliant film.

LOTR - Return of the King
Saw, it was first class classic ciinema adventure, but could use another round in the editing room.

Lost in Translation
Haven't seen. Sounds good though.

Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
Saw, it was first class classic ciinema adventure, but could use another round in the editing room.

Mystic River
Saw, was very impressed. Compelling story, perfect execution and good actors, although Sean Penn always bug me for some reason.

Seabiscuit
Saw. Thought it sucked. Why the heck is it nominated?

I've only seen two of them. It would be wrong to vote. Unless I had an invitation to the ceremony.

Parklife, did you draw your AV? Calls to mind Schiele. I like it.

SEABISCUIT  and laughing. Jeez, I'm laughing a lot today . . .

But Seabiscuit, did I hear that right? IT was actually nominated for best picture . . . oh, I could go on but I think I am truly discusted for the first time in my life.

Nope. Second after the Rob Lowe fiasco. ;)

It is Schiele actually.. someone heard that Schiele was my favorite artist and sent this to me to use as an AV for a while.....

unfortunately, can't credit him until I hit 1000 posts and can put it below my name.

I was introduced to Schiele through an exhibit in Vienna quite a few years ago (a side by side retrospective of Schiele and Klimt). I'd known quite a bit about Klimt but Schiele immediately grabbed me.

Park, how interesting. I knew Schiele's work only through books until I visited my brother who lives in Vienna, I think it was 3 or 4 years ago and saw his and Klimt's works and decided I prefered Schiele.

edited to add: You can credit Schiele in your 'location' tag, in parens perhaps; save your other tag for something else when you hit 1K.

When we came out of Lost in Translation, my wife said,
"Waiting for Godot with a happy ending."

This was my favorite movie in years. Bill Murray deserves the Oscar as well. The movie was a trip and a half.

What about "The Last Samurai?"

Last Samurai was nominated for the categories it should have been.. best costume I can see, Best Supporting Actor definitely... Best Film, no way.

The film focused on Cruise far too much and it comes across (to me) like a vain man looking into the mirror at himself. All gloss, no substance.

Nothing new there. That's how Cruise has come across for the past decade or so.

- Mindy, so easily criticizing from my living room :D

That's Cruise, I can't bear him, never took to him.

there is something to be said for consistency... I think Cruise has played the same character arc in 9 out of every 10 films he is in. Pompous ass has come to jesus revelation and is redeemed by the end of the film. Much staring off into space like he is attempting to think or shit (sometimes I'm not sure which one) will be substituted for any and all emotional moments.

Nice to see LoTR still up there. I reckon that's one trilogy I could see again and again and see new stuff every time I look.

:)

It still beats the living daylight out of Seabisquit which focused, both literally and artistically, on the flogging of a dead horse.

Well, you'll get no arguement out of me on that one. I can't believe Seabisquit actually got nominated either. But Last Samurai wouldn't have been my choice for a replacement.

You guys are going to think I'm insane, but for me, the best direction work I saw all year, and I go to the movies at least once a week, was in '28 Days Later'. I wouldn't put the movie up for consideration, but Danny Boyle did a brilliant job.

I didn't get to see any dang new films this year. LOTR would be my guess though, based on what I've seen so far. I have yet to see ROTK.
