Hi All,
I was wondering if there was a proper way to PM some one.
Do you send a PM to ask if they mind reciving PMs or do you just say Hi,
Are there any unspoken rules, Anyone care to help a newbie?

I'd say just use your best judgement. I usually let the person know why I'm PMing them (i.e. I liked their profile, or something they said in a post). If they don't feel like chatting they'll either let you know or just not write back. No biggie!

I didn't send PMs for a long time--was too shy. But if a post catches your eye, let that person know. If they don't want to answer, no big deal, like Lynxie said.

I will tell you, that I delete immediately any PM that makes me think somebody is hitting on me. Maybe that's just me, but be a gentleman.

I'm with Lynxie and Bobsgirl... letting them know why you're PMing them is important because there is a certain section of the Lit population that just PMs looking for cyber. That's fine, but when my profile says I'm happily married and looking for women only, I'm not likely to cyber with a MAN, and certainly not one who hasn't even taken the time to look at my profile.

Be extra polite and have something to say (even if it's just hello or asking a question), and you'll do great!

The other day I got a PM out of thin air from someone who was participating in a thread something to the effect of "random PM's". Just to make new friends they would pick someone (maybe with an interesting name or av) and PM them. We've been chatting and PM'ing since. So guess the moral of the story is - feel free to PM ... just don't get your feelings hurt if you don't get a response, or it isn't what you expected.

I just think its funny now. I wonder how many guys that say stuff like that actually get a postive response or any at all.

I like PM's and meeting people. People that know how to be polite and take sometime to get to know me.

Heh, it really depends. I don't get much gushing in my thread, then again I'm male. I'm lucky I get the replies I do get ^_^
