Please help me? My computer is in hell and is taking me with it!

I need to know if I can defragment my computer (C Drive) while umm.....okok...*******?:rolleyes:

Yes, I know that sounds horrible, but I have an addiction. I have hardly been online more than 15 minutes at a time, a couple times a day, since Sunday, and I am going stark raving mad!:rolleyes:

This is the problem...I get connected. If my guardian angel is happy with me, I can get here. However, it takes atleast 30-40 minutes of waiting for lit to open, then waiting for the General Board to open, then getting the little PM pop up, and deciding whether or not to risk it...:D then waiting for whichever page to load, then waiting for the reply box to load, then waiting for it to send, then waiting for the following page to load. :(

Heaven help me! I cannot take it another second!

I cannot get into my email, other than to find its exceeded its storage space and has been temporarily disabled BECAUSE I cannot get into it to reply and delete! :mad:

So...I decided to take the advice of my Tech Support from a couple days ago, and defragment. I started doing so, while pulling my hair out over PMs that I dont a lifetime to wait on to reply to, but then I started freaking, wondering if I was going to blow up my computer, or worse...Lit...:eek: so I decided I might ought to ask someones advice. :)

Please speak to me in a manner that assumes I know nothing about computers. :)

Thank you, I am an addict and I know it.

Oh, please know I will be reading, but it may be an hour or three before I am able to reply. :rolleyes: :(

I defrag mine while online quite often. I also don't use the Wndows defrag. I use VoptXP with my pc. With my 40 gig hd and even with things running, my defrag is done in less than 5 minutes. It also cleans out cookies, history, temp files, ect. :)

yes you can defragment while online...though this problem sounds deeper.

Can you get to other web pages quickly?
Can you use word or other program without too much delay?
What kind of system do you have? speed/ram?
if you use netscape, try using explorer?
are you dialed in with 56k connection?

lots to consider...we'll be here to help!

~~~try closing out as many other programs as possible...note the little line of icons in the lower right hand corner.
it really sounds like you are out of ram memory...closing other stuff could help
Sweetie,
Take a deep breath and calm down. You're gonna blow an artery and we can't have that. I see SweetCherry already told you that you could defrag while online. I don't but my computer isn't the greatest and just doing the defrag alone is what's best for mine.
Jerseyboy asked some good questions but the defrag is a good place to start and then maybe someone can help you from there.
Good luck!
:kiss:
*NO....I can access Lit the easiest. It took me 6 attempts at loading my poetry web page earlier to copy and paste a poem from it into a reply here earlier this morning, and about 7 minutes for that page to load.
Can you use word or other program without too much delay?
*I haven't tried, but since I am having this problem with everything, then I imagine it will be the same.
What kind of system do you have? speed/ram?
*Umm....? Is that French? :)
all I know is that my ex built this computer a couple years ago....
if you use netscape, try using explorer?
* I use Explorer.
*Yes.
Thanks dear...
*cute.;)
*I have no idea what I am running in the background at start up...
Thank you dear...heres what I know...
Follow me back up to your questions, its easier to answer them there....
Sweet cherry...honey, you went way above my head. :)
Do you need help? Are you cranky and irritable if deprived of your online time? You may be addcited to your computer. Do not be ashamed. Many people are addicted to computers. That is why we at the ROSEVILLECAGUY COMPUTER ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTER are here to help. For only 1/2 of your pre-tax net worth, our helpful counselors will lead you through the steps necessary to achieve a full and productive life, or at least the kind of life you had pre-Bill Gates.
At the ROSEVILLECAGUY COMPUTER ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTER we use modern treatment methodology such as sledgehammer through the monitor, clip the power cord with hedge trimmers, and pour salt water over the motherboard in addition to 12 step modalities.
i am too dumb to help with your computer but i hope you get it fixed soon before you lose your composure!!!
Can't you defrag while you sleep? Uh, you DO sleep, don't you?
;)
That's what I do.
Hi, Intrigued....do you have an updated anti-virus program you've run lately?
I need the free tape please.
A few more tidbits...first, note the length of time in between my replies, and note that I have been trying to reply, all this time.
Each day, the same thing happens, I attempt to connect, and resume the usual of email and Lit, and after hours of trying, all of a sudden, everything returns to normal. :confused: Its as though it needs to warm up, or something....:confused:
OS is Windows 98 Plus
I have already deleted my temp folder, and a good bit of the pics on my hard drive have been deleted.
I have a great many passwords, and am leary of clearing my cookies because I cannot remember not one of them, other than emails. That would be a nightmare!
Trish, I know...but damn, this has been going on since Sunday, THIS TIME, and I am really in a bad way.
People think I'm ignoring them and their emails and PM's, their posts...:( and heck, I miss Lit.
You have NO idea how close I am to pouring a glass of wine.
:(
At 23+ posts/day I can see Roseville knows what he's talking about. Good to have personal experience to draw upon.;)
I don't know much about PCs, but from what little I know, it sounds like there could be several problems. Firstly, I have also had some problems with this site either not loading at all, or very slow. I think someone else posted last Friday that they were having a similar problem.
Generally speaking, the issues you reference could relate to the speed of your processor (Pentium/AMD or other chip's speed), the amount of ram you have (many older PC have 32 or 64 megs, whereas newer ones have somehwhere twixt 256 and 512), and how many programs you are running. I think you can open the control panel, then check in the systems icon to see what your system has.
Good luck, and calm yourself... :)
You didnt say whether all the other programs on your computer work fine (like word)
If everything else is working fine the BEST answer would be to call your ISP (the people you dial into, the # would be on the bill) they may be having problems there and if not they should be more than willing to help you out!
RosevilleCAguy...thanks so much, you are too kind.:)
ljmo...thanks dear!:rose:
Coolville...another helpful one....actually, I sleep little, but mostly have just been afraid to do something I know nothing about. I am now defragmenting, and hope I am doing so correctly.
weed.....1st reply...no. :(
2nd reply....exactly.;)
I need my wine.
I got bogged down a couple months ago. Kept getting booted off. A new Norton anti-virus found a virus and quarantined it. Unfortunately it had already damaged files which I had to delete and then reload my WIN98. Has been great since and I make sure I keep my virusscan updated.
1. Put the computer down.
2. Defrag.
3. Go outside.
4. Have a Coke and a smile.
Just because you only post 17 times a day doesn't mean you don't have a problem. Besides, I can quit whenever I want to.
intrigued some of tis has already been said but I'll go through a ststematic procedure.
First how full is your hard drive? If you don't have a lot of space the OS can not write quickly the amount of memory to it for quick access.
Before running defrag, I have been told by PC jocks that it is best to run scan disk, you need to shut all other programs down, because ANY CHANGE TO ANY FILE will restrat this process, then run defrag.
Check the status of the PC, I have Win 2000 and can't remember how the exact steps are, but it in settings control system (maybe) to check if the memory is still working.
Those are the things I would try, hope you get it running.
:kiss: :rose:
I tried to defrag, but it was unable to do so due to errors, and recommended that I scan disk, which I did. It corrected about 8 errors, and now I will attempt defragging again.
I appreciate the help, thank you very much.
I could just cry, I am so stressed and tired of this, its gone on for months, off and on.
JB...Dear, I have talked to my ISP Tech Support so much, you could say we're having an affair. ;)
weed...yes, I know, I had the Klez virus a few months ago, and really should have learned my lesson.
I hope you're doing well? Its always such a treat to hear from you.:rose:
lol....I didn't say I didn't have a problem....I have a serious addiction to ellipses....I think it has something to do with all the heavy breathing I have to fit in between my thought.:D
:kiss:
