Hello Everyone.

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada, and Veteran's Day in the United States. This day was designated to give thanks, remembrance and respect to the Veterans of our countries, the men and women who were willing to risk it all for our safety and freedom. It is true that some of the actions we have been involved in have been questionable, but today, that is unimportant. What is important, is that when the call came, these people answered. Some gave all, and we remember them on Memorial Day. Some came home as walking wounded, emotionally and physically. They, and their families still bear the burdens of their sacrifices. We have not always honored our veterans as we should.

So why do we honor them with sales? Every where you look, there are Veteran's Days sales. You can save a on a new car! Guaranteed financing available! Bedroom sets at up to 50 percent off! One discount furniture store in my hometown is actually offering a scratch and dent sale on "veteran" furniture, that is, furniture that was given as a trade-in on new furniture.

I realize that some of these sales can be a boon to those who are short of cash. As a starving student, I know! I've been there. I'm still there! But most of these Veteran's Day sales go on all weekend. Go tomorrow, please. For this one day (and Memorial Day, but that will be a separate email.) please don't shop for non essential items. Groceries are cool. Medications too. Gas if you "really" need it. But each year, a small group of us quietly protest the commercialization of these days by refusing to shop. Please join us. Instead of honoring the Veterans in your life with a new TV, how about giving them a hug and a nice thank you instead?

Shop tomorrow. Honor them today. Have you hugged your Veteran today?

Hi Snowy Ciara,

I do several web sites for LGBT people working to overturn DADT in the U.S. They are some of the most respectful, disciplined decent folks I've ever worked with. I cannot add anything more to what you said, beyond thanking you for the post and supporting it!
