What made plastic surgery in particular artificial body parts (Breasts, calves, lips etc) so popular?

How did we create a society where this was a desirable thing? Is it ego/vanity? Why would someone think that its better to have fake parts than the real parts? I mean you look at porn and its fake sex enactments, fake orgasms, fake scenery....Why all this fake crap.. Is that what we asked for? Who's decided that natural is 'out' and fake is in? The media?

Are we just destined to go down the road of unrealism? What makes fake better than real? Is it self esteem that makes people want alter themselves cosmetically?

Guys, can you look at a woman who has fake parts and believe that she is more desirable because of this? Girls, same question. Do you think a man is more desirable if hes had fake calves installed or liposuction?

Help me understand... I totally don't get it...

I don't get it either. Except for reconstructive surgery, I don't see a use for fake parts.

Plastic surgery isn't for everyone but as a human you've gotta know that people aren't gonna settle for what Momma Nature gave them.

Body mods. have been around since the beginning of time.

Yes we asked for this, we asked to look at perfect bodies in our magazines, our porn and on television. We have created this ideal image of beauty.

We have created a monster.

Some plastic surgery is ok but too many people go overboard. Altering and reshaping until the result is unreconisable as being the original body.

I prefer my women natural. Nothing like a pair of fake tits to make me soft.

Has anyone seen that infomercial with that woman from Knott's Landing or Dyansty. (Can't remember her name or which show). I can't even tell you what product she is pushing. It's like a bad train wreck. I always watch for a minute just mesmerized by the hideousness that is her face and overblown lips. <shudders>

It is just a more extreme version of decoration. Changing the background. Tattoo, piercing - similar in my opinion.

I met a lady once who had the money (Yes, riff, capitalism) who not only had liposuction and fake breasts, but also had tattooed make up. Even her nipples. She could afford to decorate how ever she wished. I found it alittle freakish, but whatever you want.

I prefer jewelry. It is always appropriate AND removable if you decide you don't like it later...

What is that Jimmy Buffet tune about a "permanent reminder of a temporary feeling?"

Nope not at all! I prefer woman who are natural, ok almost natural. I don't mind women who get a breast reduction if they think their breasts are to big, and I can understand why women after they've gotten kids maybe get their breasts liftet, without getting any "filling" in them.

Otherwise they don't get more attractive to me at all, I think personality is the most important part of a woman anyway, and the most attractive part as well.

I had to see a plastic surgeon back in January 1995
(on referral from the dermatologist) to get a mole
removed from my chin.......I had the mole since I was
little...always considered it a "part of my persona"
(like Marilyn Monroe had hers on her cheek)......but
the past one-two years before removal I had this annoying
hair growing out the damn thing.....my mom would pluck
the damn hair out with tweezers, and yet it would
grow back.........there was nothing wrong with the mole
except for that "boink" of hair! The dermatologist
looked at it and said that the mole "was rooted too deep"
for him to remove, and recommended a plastic surgeon.....

I am glad I got it removed when I did.......and it there was
nothing wrong with the mole according the lab result.

So there are some instances that plastic surgery can
be necessary.........

I agree with you totally, I've also had a mole removed by a plastic surgeon...and would also willingly have a breast reduction done if I could afford it (among other things). I'm talking about people who spend huge amounts of money changing everything, turning themselves into Barbie and Ken dolls.

One of my friends has had her boobs done 4 times now! 3 lots of silicone implants in various sizes ("these are too big, these are too small, these are still too big") before she had them removed ("they were uncomfortable") and a lift done. Her nipples are totally fucked, one is twice the size of the other (which is not even shaped right) and she also has some pretty bad scarring to show for all her pain. She now complains that she should have left them alone, what she started with was a lot better than what she finished with.

Agreed and medical

I have been out with two women how have had implants one was for vanity she just wanted bigger tits but they don' look right

The other had her left one re-built after a drunk driver hit her in his car and she lost her left breast when she was 19 and out of the two the second was better all round the look and the attitude
one was "I've got big tits" and the other was "I now feel whole again"

I think that's Joan Van Ark from Knot's Landing. And I agree, it is like watching a train wreck, impossible to look away from the destruction and carnage.
