Pill vs. Patch vs. Shot

When a couple is done having children or does not want children at all, why is it all of a sudden the males responsibility to get a vasectomy?

Why is it almost always the female's responsibility to be on hormonal birth control before they decide to be done children? Maybe it's the male's turn to take care of it for a change. :rose:

From www.plannedparenthood.com.

Tube tying: "For the most common procedures [of tubal ligations], the cost is about $1,000 to $2,500. Some clinics and doctors adjust fees on a sliding scale according to income. Procedures that require hospitalization are more expensive."

Vasectomy: "Fees range between $240 - $1,000 for an interview, counseling, examination, operation, and follow-up sperm count. (Sterilization for women costs up to four times as much.) Some clinics and doctors use a sliding scale according to income."

That's another damned good reason. The consensus is that a vasectomy is faster, easier, cheaper, and with less possibility of bad side effects than tube tying.

BG, glad to hear about the NuvaRing working out for you.

Nuvaring

Hey.

I'm starting NuveRing this week, thanks for all the information on this thread! It helped confirm my decision to try this as my first form of birthcontrol (After this I will be naive no longer. Woohoo!)

I do have one thought though.

I wonder if the hormones get released into vaginal secretions? Like, should I be worried durring oral sex if my guy is tasting or swallowing up female hormones??

Any thoughts?

And is it still going good BlondGirl?

Thanks everyone! Replies will be welcome.

There is a such thing as an IUD still and they work fantastically.

http://www.popcouncil.org/images/cut380.gif

This is the one that I have and have had for close to 6 years. They are good for 10 years. The effectiveness rating is at 99%, my periods are lighter, and I have no cramping now at all.

This is my second IUD, I had one prior to the planned pregnancy of my son. I'm tickled with this method. There is nothing to remember, no shots, no pills, no patches, and no pulling out. There are two very thin strands of monofilament attached to the tip of the IUD that extend through the cervix appx. an inch, these can be felt to assure it is still in place. Otherwise you don't feel it at all.

Help!

Well, I'm finally going to start the Nuva Ring now...

I tried to insert it last night and I couldn't get it in far enough! It keeps slipping forward and lodging itself near my opening.

BlondGirl, do you have any advice on how to get it in the right way?? And far back enough?

Ugh! I want this darn thing in so I can have sex already! I've been Naive long enough...

Thanks! Any advice is welcome.

Everyone reacts differently to hormonal forms of bc. I know a lot of people who hate the shot and some it works great for. I have a friend on the patch who threw up all the time on the pill. I have tried many pills...some work great and others made me feel like horrible.

In all reality its sorta a crap shoot at first if youve never tried it. The pill is good cuz you can stop taking it if you have awful side effects, where as the shot or the patch your kinda stuck because its continuously going through your body. Again, if you cant remember to take a pill the shot or patch is good.

Nuva ring seems like way to much work to me. I dont want to worry about it falling out, did I get it in right.....just not worth it in my opinion, esp when you have so many other ways of bc that arent as complicated. The failure rate for hormonal birth controll is often because people didnt use it right. (ie didnt take pills every day, forgot to change patch every week, didnt get shot at right time) To me, that just seems to easy to screw up.

I know it wasn't an option, but I liked the copper IUD* (which must be what GeorgiaGirl is talking about). Some women can experience severe cramping and heavier bleeding. I had no problems whatsoever. The best part is no hormones to fuck with your body. It's effective the minute you start using it, and you can take it out at anytime when you want to conceive. It lasts for up to ten years.

*There is another IUD out there that uses hormones to prevent conception (meridia, I think).

I've only tried the pill and had to be taken off it due to the fact that i tried to kill my father over a light
never tried the depo shot thankfully
would like to try the patch though

Tell me, which of these do you prefer? Pros/cons for any you've been on?
Thanks :)

my wife loves the patch.... easy and she changes it once a week I think, no pills to worry about,

so there is my 2 cents

good luck

I'm towards the end of my 2nd month on the patch and I love it. Very easy, no pills to remember to take every day. The first 2 or 3 patches left my skin a little irritated but that doesn't happen any more. It does look like there is band-aid gunk on it, but it's actually on the patch, not on the skin, so when you take the patch off, it comes with it, there's no ring or anything to scrub away. Those are the only problems I've had with it, and they're obviously not big problems, so I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

I was totally going to start the patch, but....

1. I wasn't %100 sure I wanted to have actualy sex (meaning penetration) with my boyfriend; therefore, I didn't want him to ask about this weird bandaid I'm wearing on my butt.

2. If you weigh over 200 pounds, the patch is not guaranteed effective. And I wiegh over that, not by alot but I don't want to chance it.

So! I've been trying to figure out this Nuva Ring thing. I just can't get it all the way in! Maybe I have a weird vagina?!?

Anyway, I'm going to my doctor tomorrow and she's going to help me out. I'll keep ya all updated!

good luck

Just my two cents here..........

I was on the shot for 8 years........and gained quite a bit of weight (60 lbs). My dr failed to tell me that the main ingredient in the shot is what they give cancer patient to INCREASE their appetites!!!!!!!..*yikes*. On the upside, I didnt have a cycle those eight years either. That was nice....:D

But now, we have decided not to have kids and the hubby is now neutered......and Im slowly losing this weight. Different people will react differently to this shot. Just do your homework!!!

I'm not going on it, I'm not a fan of most forms of birthcontrol ... but i was at a party- and to make a long story short... one of the girls there was lactating bc of depo and i was wondering if it was common.

Honestly I think it depends on the person. Some people I know prefer the shot, others the pill. I had a bad experience with the shot, not while I was on it but later when I went off it. It took my body over a year to regulate itself again. I take the Yasmin pill and that has a low dosage and has worked well for me. I'd talk to your OBGYN and make a decision with him or her. Good luck with your choice.

I am a patch girl.

I love the ease of use.

The only problem I had was that my BF didn't want me to put it on my butt. It was ruining his view. I have now switched to keeping it on my upper back.

I love it.

Just a quick note from the other side...

I believe that there is far to much pressure placed on you girls with regards to the pill.

It is good for me to know that my daughter, sister, cousins and neice all have this option available to them. Yet you are all playing with some very potent drugs.

Also I see that it is almost a complete cop out for a bloke to hear the girl say "I am on the pill." I thought we were supposed to be living in a free and equal society...

Maybe my theory is a bit strange, but with the top end of CEO's, and money people being men, is it that they just do not want the chemicals? That they would rather have the money go to research into the female pill, with just a token amount going to the male pill...

I realise that this is not exactly what you all have been discussing, nor the threads original direction. Yet I have enjoyed and been challenged in reading this thread, and thought to share my two bobs worth...

Hoping you all have a great day.

Honestly I would perfer a male pill. I have read all about the havoc any of these birth controls can cause on the female body and I wouldn't want to put my darling through all that (especially when some can have long term sideeffects, with grater risk to larger women which is bad since my CG is in the 200+ range). As soon as the option is tested and proven to be mostly side-effect free that will definatly become my option.

Until marriage (and then we will use BC) we'll just be practicing the least fun but most effective birth control, abstinence. Then again it does make us a bit more creative ^_~

Amen, Z. The hormonal issues the pill causes women are so difficult sometimes. Would be nice to share the burden a bit. :)

Don't forget folks, it's not "us vs. them" in any way, shape or form - or shouldn't be! :) I think that we women have to remember that we have as much responsibility to think of and consider the men here as we do the children as the men do the women and the children. We aren't acting in a void, including when it comes to our bodies. Our choices for ourselves and our bodies have impact on those surrounding us, especially our loved ones.

Kudos to you, Sandiego, for researching and considering options for yourself and your SO. I've known far too many men and women who didn't.

Cycnus~

I agree 100%. I hear this alot from women around this site. I would never consider doing something that would majorly affect my body without talking to my darling about it (heck I tend to ask her opinion on the most minor things anyway ^_^). Especially in the birth control department since something screwing up in that could affect both of you for a very long time.

I mean honestly, would you like to have your man go in for a vasectomy without telling you? Or get on the male pill when it's availible (hopefully next year I heard) if it has side effects? You shouldn't ignore your own feelings on the matter, but I couldn't imagine doing something like that without taking my dearest into consideration. It's a decision that can affect both our lives, whether she takes the pill, patch, shot, diaphram, or I take/put on a condom/pill/ect I would hope we would talk to each other in great detail about it, and learn about the method alot before it's use.

Sorry for the rant ^_^
