My problem this time is that, for some reason, I can't get Adobe Photoshop (v5) to read .gif files, even though I know it can because I've done it before.

In Photoshop 5.0 LE, GIF support is a plugin. Make sure you didn't mess up the path to your plugins directory when you updated the scratch disk information. If the path is correct, you'll probbly ned to re-install the plugins to restore the "Compuserve GIF plugin."
