Peter Arnett

WeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooBOOM!

The Iraqi government has given him free run of Baghdad without a handler.
Either he's the master of deception for gathering info, or the sum of all traitors.
I think it may fall in between trying to have the most sensationalistic interview coup of the networks, and fucking career suicide.

Apparently this is not the first time he has done something like this... NBC should have been more careful in hiring him...

He's a complete tool. This will be career suicide for him as he is doing this on Iraqi tv. I think he reported a knee injury as a setback to the war.

I think he's the best forward observer/spotter we had in Dessert Storm.
The Israelis quickly put an end to anything like that in terms of coverage.

National Geographic

My understanding is that National Geographic is funding Mr. Arnett's holiday in Iraq, should that be so there's going to be one hell of a bonfire in my backyard as I've been a charter member of the NGS since the early 1960s......

The interview was a disgrace. It's one thing to report on the events you see and the people you speak to. It's another to tell a representative of an oppressive tyranny that you have been treated with "unfailing courtesy" by them. That's great, Peter, you've had your ego stroked by a bunch of flacks for a guy who gasses his own people and kills or tortures anyone who opposes him.

I think the phrase is giving "aid and comfort to the enemy", and Arnett is clearly guilty of that. He goes on Iraqi TV, speaking to a uniformed member of the government, and says that the US war plan has failed, that the US is lying to it's own people about Iraqi civilian casualties, and that President Bush is facing a "rising challenge" about the war. None of which is demonstrably true, and certainly Arnett in Baghdad is in no position to comment on those issues.

For God's sake, the war has been going on for TEN DAYS. In ten days we've marched to withing striking distance of the Iraqi capital. For all we know, Saddam might be dead right now. It looks like a longer, harder war than orignially intended, but the final outcome isn't in doubt. Saddam will be removed from power, the country will fall under US-UK control, and Iraq will no longer be a threat to us.

NBC issued a statment supporting Arnett. Look for a major shitstorm over this in the next day or so, and for NBC to backpedal and fire him, as they should have done immediately after his comments became public.

When I saw that ..... I thought for a minute I had found out who redwave was and made it over there

He essintialy got fired by CNN so I wonder why the hell NBC hired him.

Garnett is a (propagada) tool hanging out at hotel Baghdad. I think the media reactions to this war will be analyized and discussed for years to come. Most members of the media don't want to come to grips that they are nothing more than pawns used by whoever needs them. They somehow are under the assumption that they should know everything, all the time, without questions. They remind me of a 4 year old who just finished 3 chocolate bars and 2 pepsi's.

They said on the radio this morning that NBC and National Geographic sacked him over this...? Can anyone confirm...?

Yep, that is what I hear, too.

On a related note....Geraldo was reportedly shipped out of Iraq by the military. He supposedly drew a map in the sand and put the troops location on it. This was reported by CNN this morning.

It was a misunderstanding. He was simply pointing out the location of Al Capone's safe.
