I am thinking of stories which examine social rules and norms and how they might stem from older ideas and habits. For example, is a lipsticked mouth a representation of female genitalia? Or does a neck tie point to the penis? And why have some previous norms and practices died out? Think of the codpiece which developed over time into an exaggerated penis display. For example, in some societies man wear penis gourds to highlight and celebrate their penises as symbols of their manhood and virility. Imagine today's society where everything else is normal except that men wear penis gourds on the outside of their trousers and suits. How would things be different or the same?

My understanding was, lipstick stemmed from BC Egyptian prostitutes who used red rouge on their lips to highlight to potential customers what they did with their mouths for men, and had little to do with their other feminine anatomy, but that may be wrong. I will definitely chuckle today though, when I am in church, and see a mature lady with bright red lipstick, and wonder if she knows where the practice of lipstick stems from?

But you are right, how things start, and what they progress to, do change over time. For instance, it is well documented that high heeled shoes started for MEN since they could hook their higher heels better into stirrups on a horses saddle, but of course now, high heels have been taken over by the more gentle gender. I am okay with that, as I kind of like the modern day diversion, but some things make me a little concerned.

As an example, I like a lady who wears ankle bracelets, and it is something my girlfriend has a lot of, and often wears them. She just likes them, but one time after church we had to grab some supplies at Home Depot and I saw another woman, look down at her anklet, then look at her as if she questioned her motives for wearing it. Both my girlfriend and I know that wearing an ankle bracelet COULD mean a wife is a "hotwife", but that is not yet universally accepted yet. I hope it never is because I just like how they look on a lady. Without question though, that could certainly be a story idea. A virtuous lady wearing an anklet gets mistaken for a hotwife...

law suits for false advertising?

Here I thought I'd written the only story including penis gourds, but the Lit universe being so nearly infinite, it turns out a half dozen mention them.

Ha!

Here's a great quote from dtiverson's tale:

Then a guy who was evidently the leader stepped forward. I could tell he was in charge because his penis gourd was a lot bigger than the rest. Nothing changes in the guy world.

I am imagining fathers taking their sons on their 18th birthdays to the department store for the fitting of their first penis gourd. Senior male students stressing about whether their penis gourd looks OK with their prom outfit, and their partners gossiping about the guys and their gourds. Important officials might have to wear more prominent gourds. Imagine the doors of the Congress being thrown open, the band strikes up Hail to the Chief, and the (male) President enters preceded by an enormous penis gourd held off the ground by the ceremonial gourd holders.

And what would the female equivalent be? Exaggerated cleavage?
