Federal Election held today - looks like Anthony Albanese will be our new PM in a change of government, from Liberal coalition to Labor.

Note: this is intended as news only, given the number of Aussies in the AH. Please do NOT add political partisan commentary.

Wait...you have a government? I thought it was all Mad Max shit down there.

I sometimes think the world would run better if it were...

What's that actually mean? Most Americans who think about this at all probably assume Labour and Liberal are roughly the same... And, as importantly as anything else, is this Anthony Albanese the sort of fellow about whom one could plausibly write smut?

Eh. ScoMo would have been easier. Family man, member of aggressive Pentecostal cult. Has a habit of falling over or getting into ludicrous situations.

Australian unparliamentary (and parliamentary) language is the most offensive of almost any democracy.

You can't call a fellow MP a Drongo... (Even if he is).

Poor old Scotty from marketing. It was probably tackling the ten yo kid on the soccer pitch that did it.

As for a story, probably a pair of Young Liberals getting drunk and very depressed and having sad sex.

Or two Labor supporters getting very happy. 😋

I can see it now: a story wherein Australian Parliamentary debates get settled via sex-duel in a large domed structure with dildoes hanging from the fencing.

Cumderdome?

And here I thought the right(west) side of the country was run by tyrants and the left(east) side by anarchists.

Basically, Labor is leftish, Liberal is centre-right, the Nationals (the coalition partner) are rural right, the Greens are, well, green, and then we have a collection of small nationalist parties on the further right.

The best days of our parliamentary smut meisters are over, I think, what with political correctness and so, but over the decades Canberra has had a fairly vigorous collection of sexual shenanigans. Too many to mention, really.

Most importantly, is this going to change the complex and colorful world of Aussie slang? Cobber, I had me slang bangin' like a dunny door, and that's Hard yakka for us yanks. I'll be flat out like a lizard drinkin' if I have to go through all that study again

Mate, no worries about the lingo changing. No Bullshit artist in a shiny suit going to change that.

I'm stoked over that, learning the lingo had me rooted trying to figure out what my Aussie friends on the Farscape forums were saying. My last maintenance officer was RAAF and I'd print up a bboard response from Oz and ask him to translate it for me causing him to title me Sergeant Galah.

The big story from the Australian election is that a large loose group of very competent and well qualified women stood as moderate candidates who are basically looking for common sense policies on climate, on enforcing political integrity standards, and on a fairer economic/social deal for poorer people . This group of independents - and they are nearly all women, may hold the balance of power.

Both of the major parties lost first preference votes, the Liberals (who are conservative) by -8 to -10% and Labor(roughly Democrat) by -2 to -3 %

How did the process go? Was it peaceful and respectful, or was there a lot of hair pulling and lawsuits?

No Lawsuits, no storming the Parliament, no 'steal'. The PM conceded defeat after about 4 hours counting and will hand in his formal resignation tomorrow. The new guy, Anthony Albanese (Albo) will be invited to form a government and the changeover will be pretty much complete by Tuesday. We kinda take this process for granted - perhaps we shouldn't?

There are a few tight seats which might take a few days to sort out but 85% of the results are known

Storming Parliament?

Most Australians don't care about Canberra and probably couldn't get there or navigate its roundabouts to reach the Parliament building.

Canberra was designed with many large roundabouts to prevent anyone finding Parliament. To make doubly sure, they buried it...

Then, like so many stuff ups by committee they hoisted a bloody great flag over the site. 🙄

Bust a deal, face the wheel.

Canberra was designed so that you can always see your destination, but you can never bloody get there. But don't worry, the GPS will take you to the Museum of Democracy, when you ask for Parliament House.

Did you know you can hire the Old Parliament House for weddings? That's a fun setting.
