Just being nosy, I guess :p But do any of you Literoticans write in any other genres apart from erotica?

If so, what? Have you had any successes with it, or is it just something you write for your own amusement?

Which do you prefer to write - erotica, or other genres?

Discuss.

I only write erotica, and I've been doing it for a couple of years now. After talking with a fan, I've been thinking of expanding my repetoire to straight horror fiction or maybe trying to write a screenplay. Why? Because I periodically need help getting over writer's block in the erotica genre. Weird, hunh?

I prefer to write fantasy/adventure.
Sort of a family trait as all the members of my family that post/have posted here write in a similar vein. I guess it is a matter of shared tastes.

There is usually a romantic flavor to my non-erotic stories but seldom any explicit sex unless it is integral to the storyline.

I also write non fiction for print publication that is definitely not erotic at all.

I write the erotica for here mostly for my own amusement and to expand my literary horizons.

I've written and re-written a screenplay, and am about to tear it apart again. It's a perennial project and fun in its own way. I've got a half dozen other ideas for screenplays but no time to write them in.

I've got the first thirty pages of a novel, but I can't decide if it's worth pursuing.

And I write very, very bad poetry.

I've written several other stories in non-erotic categories. Not many though. Still pretty new to writing.

One is an SF piece about what really killed the dinosaurs.

One is a horror/satire comment on consumerism.

And a story about what vampires would do it their food source, that is human beings, became extinct.

That's it so far.

What did really kill the dinosaurs? And what would vampires do for food if people became extinct? You've got me wondering now!

Oui.

Non-fiction predominantly, which generally sells. Poetry, which is fairly well recieved on Lit, but no where else, a screenplay that I am certain someone will buy if only to destory it, two dramas, one that I will soon be trying to push down the throats of indie theatres, and inching on a novel that is a blend of erotic and contemporary fiction (no genre I can think of). :)

I've written some sci fi and fantasy. One western, long long ago. Nothing with any success of course :)

Interesting answers! Thanks, folks!

Do any of you get tempted to lapse into erotica when you're in the middle of something you intended to be non-erotic?

Stageplays, comedies in Swedish that I have had some minor success with. And poetry, most of it here on Lit.

I also write feature articles and product reviews for a magazine to pay the bills.

So far it's the other way around. Erotica I'm working on I want to take out the erotic parts because I don't think the sex really belongs.

I write mostly non-erotic fiction and poetry, and a bit of creative non-fiction. I have one and a half novels written and short stories and essays.

I am currently working on a semi-fiction novel set in King arthurs court. The story itself is woven around Merlin and a benevolent dragon. (Naturally)

My first attempt at this was actually a collaboration. My collaborator dropped the project twice. The first time I rewrote everything he did as I felt he was straying from where I wanted to go. Then he wanted back in and I scrapped everything I rewrote. 4 chapters later he dropped out again.

Now I am starting from scratch with a better perspective on where I want this to go.

I write lots of poetry, erotic and non-, and I've been known to write some interesting non-erotic fiction.

But mostly, I don't like to make that distinction. I don't write porn as wank pieces; I do it because I genuinely believe that sex can and will be used as a integral part of mainstream literature. I subscribe the words of JG Ballard in his 1995 introduction to "Crash":

In a way, pornography is the most political form of fiction, dealing with how we use and exploit each other, in the most urgent and ruthless way.

Sex can be the ultimate metaphor, driving in a message in a more powerful and devastating form than anything else. It's the way of the future. ;)

If that's what the story asks for... ;)

Other than school assigned compositions I have been writing for the past five years. The first few years I took successive creative writing courses, and wrote almost exclusively for my own amusement. The courses were productive, dependant upon the quality of the instructor.

Next, I joined (successively) several email groups of aspiring writers. The one I finally stayed with for nearly a year involved writing a flash story (55 to 1000 words) to a prompt supplied by the moderator. There were three prompts a week, and to take part, you had to critique two stories from each prompt you submitted. For a year, I wrote something (I didn’t say anything good) for three prompts a week and up to twenty critiques for each prompt story.

[That’s three 55- 1000 word stories, and up to 57 critiques, if everyone in the chain fulfilled all the prompts. Actually, it came to more like 20 - 30 critiques a week]

I have been participating on the AH board since I joined, last March. Although I had been expelled from the email group for writing pornographic material, I wasn’t able to write a story fit for Literotica until September.

Of my 4 Literotica stories, one is in the Non Erotic category.

I also have a number of Flash Stories, and a kid’s Halloween story at the other end of my Non Erotic Stories link, in my sig.

I don't much care whether the story I am writing is erotic or non-erotic, provide it is a good story, but I do want to participate here at Literotica.

Apart from my creative writing class where I was restricted to a maximum of 400 words, letters to our local paper almost every week, reports and bids for funding - In my previous careers I had written a large number of 'how to' publications on boring subjects such as 'How to recognise and how to avoid dry joints in soldering' - That one was made into a video - and 'How to make people redundant'.

I followed those successes with computer system manuals, advice on the data protection act, and how to read a balance sheet.

I started by doing a daily precis of Hansard for the company's directors - thrilling stuff.

My chef d'oeuvre was a 400 page report on how it might, or might not, be possible to move 27,000 staff out of inner London. The one-page summary 'proved' that all and any variations on the theme would not be a paying proposition if output was to be maintained. The best that could be achieved was a loss of £500,000 on an investment of £35 million if the bank rate stayed stable. If it rose, which it did, the loss would increase.

The move did not take place. The company took another course and many of the 27,000 were made redundant. That led to the manual on how to make people redundant.

My stuff on Lit is slightly more interesting.

I write predominantly erotic horror, with more emphasis on the horror than the erotic. The wider sub-genre of erotic horror is quite different from most of the erotic horror here at Lit. I have got to admit that I am quite a snob when it comes to this genre. I read an awful lot of erotic horror books, and not one of them is about sex with a ghost thrown in. It's more hard-hitting and psychological than that. Also quite perverse, dark and twisted. If anyone else has read Edward Lee or Wrath James White, you'll know what I mean.

I also write pure horror and sci-fi. I began trying my hand at a Fantasy novel, but NaNoWriMo took over, and that one has had to take a back seat for a while.

I do find it incredibly hard to write any kind of fiction, without sex getting thrwon into the mix somewhere. But, it is possible to write a mainstream horror, with many sex scenes within it. Most horror authors do, in fact, with the possible exception of Stephen King. :)

Why does this turn me on? Nice post!

Oh, that would land me in big trouble. Almost all of my non-Lit writing is advocacy related commentary/editorials. (It shows a bit in my non-erotic holiday contest entry.)

I have absolutely no desire to write any fiction other than erotica -- or even to write a novel-length erotic work.

I also dabble in poetry -- when the spirit moves me. It only happens when I feel something extraordinarily powerful.

I don't write much fiction that isn't erotica. But I do write a parenting column (shhh, let's not mention my porn to anyone, shall we!) and lots of technical stuff in my professional field. In addition to my column, I've been published several times, but never paid! Would love someday to make a little money off my words and be able to work one or two less jobs to make ends meet. Even temporarily!

I've written two, yet-to-be-published mainstream novels, had eight short stories accepted by lit mags (mostly on-line) including a non-erotic story that first appeared in Lit..

In non-fiction, I've cranked out sports and general interest columns (print and net) for twenty years or so and had scholarly work (history) published.

For me, there's no real difference between the two when it comes to the challenge of telling a story well and the satisfaction of kinds, sorta, almost, getting it right. :)

mostly porn... ahem.. excuse me, erotica here. though i have written some poetry (badly) i always find myself writing about sex
i think its because of my age. im at that stage where i want to have sex all the time...*sigh* can't be helped...not that i want it to be.

one day id love to write something in the childrens science fiction arena.. one day...

I started writing a fantasy/adventure which was great, huge fun and l loved it, but I just wasn't ready to commit to all the plotting and character arcs a longer work needs. Whether it was any good... well, it was okay... but I had a blast with it.

Poetry - no. Not anymore, and I accept the thanks of the world for stopping before someone got hurt.

I'm just now "coming out" as a serious writer... my stories always turned to erotica, and I never understood why. My mom's been telling me for years I should write something serious. Thanks to Lit and the poeple on this board, I'm accepting that there's nothing wrong with not writing the next "Brothers Karamozov".
