The Year 810:

April
  • P#1 -- 14 Viking longboats leave Rogoland on the Southwest Norwegian coast:
    • They are for England's east-central coast, specifically Northumbria.
    • Vikings have conquered lands there, and these settles intend to settle there.
  • After just 2 days at sea, though, the fleet is caught in a savage storm:
    • The fleet is blown off course, scattered, and damaged, though, to what degree our characters will not know for sometime if ever.
    • 5 days later, the skies and seas calm, and the longboat of Hagan of Jørpeland -- with its 20 surviving occupants -- finds itself alone in the open sea.
    • For 10 days they drift on mostly windless seas.
    • Initially, they row the longboat southwest, but when the food and water run out and exhaustion sets in, they simply drift with the wind and current.
May
  • The Vikings finally see land again.
    • 18 days have passed since leaving Jørpeland.
    • Hagan's longboat is guided up a river that cuts through rugged, forested lands.
    • They come to shore about 3 miles from the sea.
  • The Vikings discover a Christian village the following day:
    • The village is called Riverbank.
    • It has a population of 30, mostly women and children.
    • The village is less than a mile up the river from the Viking camp.
    • The village had been taken over by brigands two months earlier:
      • Most of the men and older boys were killed.
      • Most of the women were raped; many of them were taken as long term lovers.
      • The community as a whole is essentially enslaved to serve the brigands.
  • For three days, while resting up, the Vikings surveil the village:
    • P#2 -- On that third day, an English villager, Clara stumbles upon Viking scouts and is captured by Ingrid and Eirik.
    • She is questioned by Hagan and promises him anything to not hurt her people.
    • That night, Kirstin is freed to inconspicuously warn her people of the impending attack upon the brigands.
  • P#7 -- The Vikings attack the village:
    • The attack is successful: all but two brigands are killed and no Viking is seriously harmed.
    • P#8 -- However, the Chief of the brigand band escapes on horseback.
    • Kirstin warns that this man's brother -- a Lord in a town 3 days ride away -- will likely return with his armed force of 20 or more men.
    • Without authority, she vows control of the village to Hagan is he will protect it.
  • Brother William arrives at Riverbank by row boat in Post #14, although he is first mentioned (and described) in Post #13.
  • Encouraged by Brother William, Kirstin convinces the village to vote on letting the Vikings remain:
    • A vote is given to each of the 50 residents, with the adults casting the votes of their children.
    • Riverbank residents demand more from the Vikings than just protection. The offer, counteroffer, and counter-counter offer result in this agreement:
      • The Vikings must live apart from the Saxons in an adjacent village to be built on unused land.
      • The Vikings will gain 1/2 of the autumn crops and must provide 1/4 of the farming labor.
      • Riverbrook as a municipality collects and sells a portion of the autumn crop (and other produced goods) as taxes to be used for village expenses. The Vikings will be required to provide a portion of their crops and other products as taxes after they have trained the residents of Riverbank to protect the village and the Vikings themselves are no longer the primary defenders of the Saxons.
      • And to cement a bond between the two peoples:
        • Chief Hagan must marry Kirstin.
        • And Ingrid must marry a Saxon; she herself chose Brother William, who while a Monk has not been very attentive to his vow of celibacy.
        • With the exception of his heir -- presumably his eldest son -- Hagan's children by Kirstin must be raised as Christians.
  • Construction on Riverbank's defenses and the training of its Saxon residents as defenders begins.

The Village of Riverbank

Location:
  • On the south bank of the River Tweed (the modern day, east coast border between Scotland and England, btw).
  • 4 miles from the sea, just barely upstream from the tide water limit.

Description:
  • 15 buildings, including:
    • 6 homes (that also serve as domestic business locations and winter housing for most of the stock animals).
    • 1 Church, small, Christian (of course); also serves as a Community Gathering Building. (I will find a picture at some point.)
    • 8 other structures, including a blacksmith/forge, small water turned grain mill, etc.
  • They are a combination of ax-split lumber, mud, and thatch.

Defenses:
  • Haaa!
  • There is no wall, no moat, no significant height difference (although the village sits on a slightly raised hillock that could be dug out on the outer perimeter to create a moat and a mud wall).
  • There had been men and boys ready to defend the village and villagers, but most of them were killed by brigands who took control of the village two months before the arrival of the Vikings.
