I adore live plants. Not the run of the mill plants but something more exotic. Right now I have five little Cherimoya trees. It is a fruit bearing tropical variety usually only found in the southern hemisphere.

So, since I'm on these damn narcotic painkillers every so often I seem to become somewhat detached and begin to think of strange things. I was just thinking about my little trees and why I like them so much. Then I began to wonder how many of you out there also keep plants and what the reasons are behind it.

I'm not so sure what it is for me, they are completely helpless but to me they are beautiful and delicate. They depend on me completely for their survival. There well being. I don't fret over them.

I haven't quite figured it out yet.

Anyone else here like to grow and keep plants?

I love plants, I have asthma and anything that cleans the air is good for me! I have a huge Aloe that I grew from a small 3" plant to the 12" monster it is now. We have to transplate it soon as it's starting to sprout new plants at the edges of the pot it's in. I love aloe's for their healing properties and I love to grow cacti, as I tend to forget to water plants!

I have a rubber tree and something else which looks like three foot high palm trees. I have them because they clean the air, especially in winter when the house is closed up. And because they remind me that, even in the death of winter, there is life and that spring will come.

I also have a couple small pots of african violets that were given to me by my grandmother and which have survived amazing inattention. :)

I love plants, but unfortunately, I am like the kiss of death to any plant brought into this house. No matter how I try, they always die on me.

So I mostly settle for outdoor plants, though I do keep a very pretty miniature rose in the house that so far has endured living with me... C got it for me a while ago to replace the one he accidentally dropped during moving.

When we were dating, he bought me a gorgeous orchid plant, because they're my favorite flower. I kept it alive for two months, then it just fizzled.

I've had good luck with Cyclamens, though I tend to kill anything I touch. I had an air plant before I moved that did well too. Right now I'm bringing back to life the hydrangia my friend got for me when my son was born. It almost died, but it's got new leaves now. Hopefullt it'll survive!

Between me and my son plants have no chance. Whenever I do ok with a plant, D eventually dumps it over one too many times and the poor plant gives up. I do have 4 rose bushes in pots outside that are doing ok. But mostly cause theyr'e out front, where D's not allowed to go, and i don't have to remember to water them.

As we have only 'officially' lived together full time for almost 5 months now. We have only two plants in our home right now. i'd like to add a whole lot more eventually.

One given to us for Christmas, a cute bonzai (sp?) .. complete with it's own rock garden and beach sand .... it even has a little bamboo fence and a rake.

The other one was rescued by my Master. Some tenents next door had moved out so He confiscated it. It's 3 times the size it was when He 'found' it. No idea what type of plant it is though.

Now that summer is here, we have lots of plants on our balcony. He grew green bean plants in a window box from seed, i grew Morning Glories (my absolute all time favorite flower/plant .. i just love how the vines grow so quickly and climb & cover everything .... when the sun shines on the flowers i swear they look just like stained glass.) He picked up two potted tomato plants which are growing very quickly as well, standing at at least 3 feet in height already ... and it's only June! We also have a few pots hanging out there with flowering plants. Again, i'm not sure what they are called. The balconey looks so much prettier than it did during the winter months. i LOVE summer.

A green thumb I do not have...

I love plants. They just don't live long here. The cats want em, I'm neglectful, outside all manner of wildlife dig them up. So I love hardy plants. I really love plants that make something I can eat but I don't have any. *pouts*

Right now I have my longest living plant ever! I got it at my very first staff meeting at the library about eight years ago. My wonderful ex boss, who I absolutely adore and still have lunch with from time to time, had these great staff meetings that were pot lucks. She always gave away prizes. I got a shamrock plant. Every year I either have to divide it or put it in a bigger planter. I keep it in the "children's" bathroom window under a wonderful piece of stained glass.

It opens in the morning to the sun almost like a human being might. If I happen to be up in the morning and see it is not open I water it. That's it! That's all I have to do! It also makes little white flowers!

In my yard, I have dogwoods, azaleas, daffodils, and white coral bells that volunteer to bring me a smile every year. I also have some plants that I don't know the names of but I love.

Anything I've actually planted the wildlife destroys. So I gave that up!

A few years ago my Mom gave me a violet, I can't ever keep those things alive but I'm not sure if I threw it out or not and a damned cactus. Those are hard to kill. *giggles* For a while one of the cactus plants looked like this thin green penis it kept getting longer and longer but it's sort of withered and brown now.

i think when they get too old they are SUPPOSED to wither and die. No?!!? *snorts* ..heh..

Spider plant right now, I need to find a good source of cacti and aloe plants in my area. I got enough of my mother green thumb to keep things alive and well, most of the time.

I'm also thinking about getting a Spider Plant or two for the apartment. Apparently they are good at taking containments out of painted walls and carpets.

Not only that, they just look kinda cool as well. :D

Genuine garden fanatics here.

We have over 200 varieties of daylilies as well as roses, coneflowers, columbines, salvia, yarrow, delphiniums, rose mallow, irises, a grape arbor, lilac hedges, and various 'fill-in' shrubs and annuals.

in fact, we have so many daylilies we had to pot a bunch up and put them on sale.

Oh - I forgot the apple and cherry trees.

Indoors we have a monster aloe, an 8 year old jade plant, a corn plant and tons of pothos for those lightless corners.

Guess we just can't live without plants.

On my terrace I have a giant rubber plant and a smaller one , a white roses climber plant , a little lemon three , a ficus benjamin plant ( I don't know the english name for it ) , a couple of papyrus plants and an aloe one. b. :rose:
