"On the Job" Story Event 2025

I'm just finishing a story that was a bear for me to work on because it involves a scenario that totally violates ethics I have practiced for many years. The setting and the general age of the characters, as well as the female leads name and hair color, were specifically requested...it involves a school bus driver and an 18 year old female student. As a driver, I did my absolute best to train myself to never think of a student in any form of a sexual way. Was I always successful? Of course not. There were several high school seniors over the years that challenged my thought process. I never did anything about any of them, of course. But the thoughts I tried to ban did creep in, on occasion. Anyway, the entire story takes place on a school bus... I think that qualifies. Technically, the drivers "place of employment" is the bus garage. But the bus itself is considered school property, which is why school rules apply on school buses. Maybe I'll wait to submit it to the challenge.

Trying to set the ground rules in my story when the new girl is about to join the all-male team:

ā€œThat’s sorted then,ā€ said Ray. ā€œJust one other thing. Work and play don’t mix. Nobody is to hit on Michelle. No sexual innuendo. No smacking of arses, no comments on looks. Not like last time, Bruce. You two are accountable for making sure of that. She needs to feel safe from male attention. If I hear otherwise from her, I’ll cut off your balls. Got it?ā€

ā€œGot it!ā€ we responded, as obedient as schoolchildren.

ā€œAnd that goes for field trips, too,ā€ he added. ā€œIt doesn’t matter how far you are out of the workshop. You’re travelling on government dollar, so you’re at work. One person per swag. Right?ā€

ā€œRight!ā€ we chorused again.

I hope that's sufficiently clear.

Okay mine is finished … sitting in my draft folder just waiting for a few days to hit ā€˜Publish’. I fear it being too early and then drops off faster and everyone publishes at once.

I am a bit excited about this one. I doubt it is my best story as it is a bit far fetched but it was fun.

The Ice Queen Reigns was a bit fun to write. I added a touch of angst and a tad bit of playfulness.

Thanks for putting this challenge together!!

Ugh!! I did put in the author notes to please not publish my story until the 15th, and they've gone ahead and published it today!
I don't know if this will disqualify me from being part of the fun but it's out here. >

That's unfortunate. Just looking at the instructions on the first page of the thread, it says:
  • The posting period is between April 18 - April 24
  • Final list to be posted on April 25, Friday
  • Use "OnTheJob" in your Notes section when submitting.
Did you happen to put "OnTheJob" in the Notes? If so, I imagine your story would've been held until April 18th at the earliest.

Maybe you can contact Laurel and get it pulled and resubmitted? Good luck.

I believe you can submit contest / event stories early but you have to be clear in Notes to Admin that they are contest / event stories.

Yours has the "on the job" tag which is not enough. It is recommended to add it, of course, so that readers can find your story among others easily, but it's the admin note that matters.

"OnTheJob" was the very first line in the notes.
I even mentioned here and several people mentioned that I could request it be held for the hangout and posted on April 18th.
It appears that line was ignored.

Just follow up politely through Laurel. It's not a competition, so you wouldn't think there would be any problem in just including in the published list on 25th April.

Please excuse the ignorance, I'm brand new here. I have never submitted anything before. I have written a story that fits this challenge. It is short, about 2000 words. I assume this is acceptable?

I just want to be sure I'm clear on how to submit a story for this challenge? As I understand it, one would submit a story using the main submission link and simply place the words "On the job" in the notes. Is this correct or will there be some clear submission link when the challenge is active?

Thanks

Yes but to be safe, you might want to directly copy and paste the magic words from the instructions. It appears like there’s no spaces and potentially case sensitive.

This is absolutely fine. The meaning of "workplace" is stretched very broadly in this event, and it's more about just keeping it on-site.

You should see some of the entries from last year, too. There was at least one magical library and plenty of other, very unorthodox workplaces.
Oh, I never can resist a magical library! šŸ„°šŸ“š Gonna have to look that up šŸ‘€

I actually have two stories for this event, surprisingly!

While @PennyThompson has been going through my main entry (24k in Sci-Fi), I got struck by sudden inspiration and in two sittings banged out a shorter (and much simpler) one at 8k. Though I could hold that one until Pink Orchid, I'm probably too impatient to wait that long :)

So, if I don't have to make major changes to the first one that'd push it to Geek Pride, I'll probably just run them both. Might be fun to compare how different categories fare in this event (SF vs. EC).

I’m very late to the party, but an idea presented itself while reading this thread and now I’m pleasantly surprised to find myself about 2k words into a new story that fits the theme. Hopefully it turns into something presentable in the next week or so! Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with ā˜ŗļø

I wasn't going to write anything for this event this year. Key word: wasn't.

Then I stumbled across an eternally recurring argument over whether or not squirt is pee and now I have the start of a WLW scenario at the gynecologist's office exploring that very controversy. Let's see if I can get this one done in time.

Ooo, good luck šŸ€! Mine has a medical theme too, although it’s the psychiatric department instead of gynecology. Just passed 4k words, so it’s flowing pretty smoothly ā˜ŗļø

Sounds like medical could be its own theme this year. Mine take place in a rural doctor's office with the physician and her new patient.
