It seems that almost all of your stories are about penal slavery. Just curious; what drew you to that theme? It seems like a long shot, but did you ever know someone in prison or were you in one yourself (either as a guard or an inmate)? Or is it just purely imaginative?

I assume that Animate Rentals is the like what really happens to some inmates - their labor is contracted out to private companies. Of course, I know you're not talking about working in a call center or whatever really is done with those people.

I worked in the legal system for 27 years. I didn’t like the way slave stories ( and most erotica generally) portrayed the court system. Further, I wondered about how to create a world that slavery could plausibility exist.

I write mainstream SF and alt history. I started with the premise that the 13th Amendment allows for criminal enslavement. In my alt history Lee was assassinated by a disgruntled Union soldier at Appomattox. Reconstruction lasted into the early 20th century and there were decades of guerilla war and ruthless reprisals. Including enslavement of Southern sympathizers. Over time, penal slavery was seen as an effective deterrent and revenue source. Things that would normally only result in a fine in the real world can lead to a term of enslavement in my universe.

My stories explore that alternate world and how slavery would affect society. Animate Rentals could very easily rent slaves to work in a call center. I actually may steal that.

I have lots of stories in this universe still to write.

I am now editing my submission. It is set during a university psychology experiment, so the 'employees' are students, if that is okay.
