So the wife and I have been living out of the freezer for quite some time and it was time to refill it. (Yes we have a rather large Chest Freezer.) We got ready for this buy getting more vacuum sealing bags. (Actually we got rolls so we could cut the bags to size.)
This morning I loaded a couple of coolers into the back of the car and half filled them with ice. Not enough to freeze but enough to keep things chilled until we arrived back at home. We loaded up some cash and off we went. We knew where we were going.
First stop was the local European Butcher. We loaded up with about ten pounds of good Bratwurst, five pounds of Weisse Wurst, four Rabbits and a couple of pounds each of Venison and Wild Boar. Then it was off to Sam's Club.
Oh they looked at us when we rolled the shopping cart up to the checkout. In the cart we had not one but two Boneless Pork Loins, (eight pounds each) Four packs of New York Strips, (for a total of 16 two inch thick one plus pound steaks.) 5 five pound tubes of super lean ground chuck, ten pounds of assorted cuts of Chicken, five pounds each of Talapia and Catfish, ten pounds of thick sliced Bacon and five five pound super lean Beef Top Round Roasts. We payed a bit less than $200.00 for all of this.
When we got home the work began. The chicken was seperated into meal sized portions, vacuum packed and dated. The Pork Loin and Beef Loin were cut into two pound sections and again they were vacuum packed and dated. The Steaks were seperated and packed. Are you starting to get the idea here?
The Hamburger was broken down and made into patties then packed away into the freezer. Everything was seperated into servings for two and packed away.
Yes that $200.00 we spent hurt a bit but not as much as you would think. We now have enough food for a couple of months at least with the little things we pick up from time to time.
Think about it.
The Hamburger alone is enough for 36 1/3 pound patties or 18 meals for my wife and myself. The steaks make up another 16 meals. The Pork Loin, well we split that into roughly two pound sections each of which make two or three meals each. On a low scale that comes to another 16 meals each. We haven't even touched the Chicken or the other meats yet and we're already at 50 meals. And people wonder why I eat so well.
