Nude Day 2011 Contest Support Thread

I'm very new to writing for Literotica. I think my stories are improving with each attempt. I am searching for an editor.
I'm going to read the three winning stories to get an idea what it is people like and are searching for. I did enter the contest with a few entries and averaged a 4.62 on one story and a 4.56 on the other. Maybe some editing might improve my ratings.

Those are excellent scores for any contest. The voters are tough in these! Good going!

What about comments - public OR private?

I managed an entry this year, although it was touch and go. And I'm more than happy with my score, even if I didn't win anything. However, I only managed one public comment and two emails. Really disappointing, especially as I added my usual feedback plea at the end!

Anyone else note a trend like that, or am I just unlucky?

I had two PCs in total on the entries from myself and jeanne_d_artois. I think that the Nude Day theme attracts less interest than any of the themed contests, both in terms of writers and readers. However the number of entries and the reads/votes seem to increase year on year for Nude Day.

I wasn't wholly happy with either of my entries. I blame lack of continuous writing time because of major building works on our house and baby-sitting grandchildren 4 days a week.

The builders have gone. The grandchildren haven't but perhaps I'll have more writing time for Summer Lovin'.

I think comments are based on how emotional a reader might become while reading a story. Many want to offer an agreement or disagreement with a story. I had three stories in the contest and quite a few comments and pm's, most coming in the first few days of posting.

Not all comment are complementary. Here's my numbers for this contest after the sweeps. I'm rather happy with the results.

I've taken the time to read all three winning stories, all are wonderful!!!! Congratulations to the winners and thank you for taking the time to create such stories. All three were VERY deserving of their awards.
I have a long way to go to be in the league of these three authors, but I'll keep trying to improve.
I read hundreds of stories for many years before I had the courage to attempt to write one myself. I love writing and reading on this site!

Congratulations to the winners. I thought the three stories were awesome and, taken together, a wonderfully wide and perceptive take on nudity, love and eroticism.

Following the thread I gradually became more and more irritated with the junior school bickering about why writers who left ages ago weren't competing, what was the relevance/eroticism of the subject of nudity and nitpicking inanities about 'categories'.

I think most of the disparaging remarks about a nude theme came from male writers who fail to 'get it'. (shychi I award you an honorary chromosome).

IMHO, the standard of perception and concept of the winning stories was an all-time high. Again, my admiration of a tour de force that in three disparate approaches took 'nude day' to an erotic high.

Here’s an interesting comparison: It involves one of the winning stories (Lavender and Love) and a story by the good doctor (A Man in Turmoil). Which one do you think should have won the prize?

Many people know that I believe certain categories have an unfair advantage in these contests (romance, sci-fi, non-human etc) based on how different categories are scored (see owlwhispers famed work for further details). But I’ll leave that argument for another post.

In this case both stories are romance category ones. Here are the figures for each:

The story that didn’t win had 50% more views, 50% more comments and 4 times as many votes. It also received something in the order of three times as many 5’s as the other. But still lost to it.

Don’t misunderstand me – I understand why the story that had fewer votes and fewer views and fewer comments won under the present system. But I do think that the above highlights perfectly one of the major problems with said system. I would have given the nod to "A Man in Turmoil".

It would certainly be very hard to argue that LAUREL’S winner is really the choice of our readers.​

Here’s another oddity with the results: On July 13th the Sci-Fi “Kiss” story was running away with the contest – it had 347 votes and a rating of 4.89.

Looking today I see it only has 188 votes and a rating of 4.81. Which means it lost almost half its votes and its score dropped!

Meanwhile, “Tribal Unity”, the eventual winner, had 217 votes and a score of 4.71 on July 13th. Today it has 222 votes and a rating of 4.81!

The math just doesn’t add up.

It certainly makes you wonder what our good QUEEN was doing for those two days that the results were late. I think even she’s been getting embarrassed by all the Sci-Fi 1st place winners.

Mind you in this case I'm quite happy she massaged the figures - I just wish she'd kept at it until the Sci-Fier had dropped completely off the list.​

I guess I don't understand the system and how stories are judged. All I have to say is that I love reading these stories and enjoy an attempt or two of adding a few of my own. It was the first contest I ever entered here and certainly didn't expect to win anything.
I would, however like to know how my 2 stories stacked up against the others. Is there a way to see the final standings, just to see where my stories finished.
I already have another story written and waiting to enter in the Summer Lovin' Contest. This is a lot of fun, especially sharing these stories together as a couple.

Unfortunately, I didn't track this contest. I had other things going on, and I'm in the process of automating the statistic gathering.

( In the past, I've manually checked each and every necessary page, recording the stats in a spreadsheet. By the end of the contest, it takes about two hours a night )

That's the only way to figure out where you stand -- lots of paperwork, or hoping that I do it for you *laugh*

Hey, no offense intended, I've won a couple of those Last Place Awards. They look just as nice on the mantle as any other trophy.

I think it was the low number of votes more than anything to do with the story.
